A lot of the time, great rivalries begin after a betrayal. While fans do enjoy seeing certain wrestlers team up with each other, sometimes they do need to split. Otherwise, it would be a wasted opportunity as history has shown multiple times how successful these sorts of angles could be.

Typically, the more popular a team is, the bigger would be the betrayal, and equally big would be their rivalry. Some of these rivalries have allowed multiple wrestlers to become main-event Superstars in WWE, but at the same time, some breakups didn't lead to anything worthwhile.

10 Wasn't Needed: The New Day

The New Day's breakup last year happened when Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were sent to Raw, while Big E stayed on SmackDown. Rumors suggested that WWE wanted Big E to have a more serious gimmick and leave his New Day character behind.

It's been many months since The New Day split, and while the team still exists, Big E still isn't a part of the team. Fans have always loved New Day and most people still think that they shouldn't have been broken up.

9 Was For The Best: The Shield

The Shield's initial breakup helped all three members of the group achieve greater success in the company. Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose (Jon Moxley), all went on to become World Champions in WWE and also achieved Grand Slam status.

While it was one of the most shocking betrayals of the last decade, this decision was for the best. Sometime later, The Shield reunited but their second breakup wasn't so great as the previous one.

8 Wasn't Needed: Heavy Machinery

Heavy Machinery was a great tag team on SmackDown. But Otis and Tucker split last year when WWE sent the latter to the Raw brand while his partner stayed on the blue brand. Sometime later, Tucker even betrayed his former partner, thus officially disbanding the team.

These two had great chemistry. And while Otis is currently tagging with Chad Gable, fans believe his partnership with Tucker made more sense. Ever since Heavy Machinery broke up, Tucker had been completely phased off WWE TV before being released on April 15.

7 Was For The Best: The Rockers

Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michaels were in a tag team called The Rockers at one point. They split due to real-life issues and, after their breakup, Jannetty lost all of his relevance. But on the other hand, Michaels went on to become one of the all-time greatest wrestlers in the world.

The Rockers split in 1992 after Michaels landed a Sweet Chin Music on Janetty and threw hip partner through the Barber Shop window.

6 Wasn't Needed: Big Cass & Enzo Amore

Big Cass (CaZXL) and Enzo Amore (nZo) were quite over as a tag team in WWE. But after Cass revealed himself to be Enzo's mystery attacker, the duo split. They feuded later but their rivalry didn't benefit anyone involved.

Apparently, WWE had a ridiculous reason to break this tag team. According to Amore, the higher-ups in WWE didn't like the fact that the two were so over with the crowd and it ended up being the reason they broke up on television.

5 Was For The Best: Evolution

When Evolution was formed by Triple H, most people hated them. But looking back in history, Evolution proved to be one of the biggest reasons why Batista and Randy Orton became successful.

Orton was kicked out of the group in 2004, while Batista quit the faction the next year. Though officially, Evolution ended after Triple H attacked Ric Flair with a sledgehammer in October 2005.

4 Wasn't Needed: The IIconics

The IIconics were fun to watch as a team. Billie Kay and Peyton Royce had great chemistry, but it seemed like WWE didn't know how to use them. Even after winning the Women's Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania 35, WWE didn't use them properly.

These two were forced to split after losing a match to The Riott Squad. Then, WWE sent Kay to SmackDown while her partner stayed on Raw. Peyton was supposed to receive a singles push following the split but that too didn't happen. Both women were released from WWE on April 15, along with 8 other wrestlers.

3 Was For The Best: Edge & Christian

Edge and Christian had great chemistry as a tag team and fans enjoyed watching them. However, it's quite obvious that if Edge hadn't split with Christian in 2001, he wouldn't have been in the main event scene.

Even though it took Edge many more years to really become a main-eventer, the E&C breakup was a no-brainer at that time.

2 Wasn't Needed: Fire & Desire

Mandy-Rose-Sonya-Deville

Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville broke up after Rose found out that her former best friend was trying to sabotage her relationship with Otis. Ever since their breakup, none of the two have broken out as a singles star.

While Rose is in a different tag team now, Sonya is no longer an active competitor in the ring. She is aligned with Adam Pearce as an authority figure in WWE but still isn't featured as much as during her time with Rose. Had Mandy and Sonya never break up, they could've thrived as Women's Tag Team Champions.

1 Was For The Best:  #DIY

Tomasso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano are both great as tag team partners and as rivals. Their breakup in NXT led to one of the biggest rivalries on the brand.

These two broke up after losing their match at TakeOver: Chicago, followed by many great matches against each other. This breakup helped both Tomasso and Johnny lift up the NXT Championship too. But if Triple H and Co. hadn't pulled the triggers, these two probably would've forever remained tag team wrestlers in NXT.
