There may well not be a sexier character in science fiction these days than Harley Quinn. She hasn't been featured in many of the live adaptations of the DC Universe, but when she has it has been memorable. Mia Sara (Ferris' girlfriend in Ferris Bueller's Day Off) played Dr. Harleen Quinzel in Birds of Prey for a season in 2002, and more recently Margot Robbie had audiences across the globe drooling when she portrayed the character. WWE fans have been treated to a certain diva cosplaying as Harley Quinn recently as well.
This is none other than a newcomer to the SmackDown roster, Alexa Bliss. Tiny, blonde, fit, sexy, and most of all ferocious, there are few women involved with WWE today who bring her sex appeal to the table. Furthermore, there are none who could pull off a better Harley Quinn-inspired outfit and look. It's really something special.
Whether she's decked out in that outfit or not, Alexa Bliss is one of the best new ladies to come out of NXT. She first joined the company back in 2013, spent some time as a ring announcer, worked with former NXT tag team Champions Blake and Murphy, and got close to an NXT Championship herself, but never won. In July of 2016 she was drafted to SmackDown. She recently lost to Becky Lynch for the SmackDown Women's Championship.
She has come into her own as a performer in WWE since turning heel and her attitude and looks are just a couple of attributes that make her a great presence in the ring. Here are fifteen things you didn't know about Alexa Bliss.
15 She Can Sing
We've all seen her in the ring and know she's a great performer, showing off an admirable mix of flexibility, strength and endurance. Her assets are not all of a physical nature however and the girl has a musical streak and a set of pipes on her. She comes from a musical family, loves music (mostly country music), and has been singing for most of her life. Her grandfather was a country musician and she has sung at shows in her native Ohio. Lexi Kaufman (as she's known outside of the ring) is multitalented and we'll prove this more and more as this list goes on. A hard worker, and someone who constantly works on her talents, her singing may not be as amazing as her wrestling, but she does have quite a voice.
14 Accused of Being a Ring Rat
For those who are unsure of this term, I'll explain (for most of you I don't have to, I know). A "lot lizard" is a woman who stays at truck stops and sleeps with truck drivers. A "puck bunny" is a woman who follows hockey and tries to date hockey players. A "ring rat" is a female fan or wrestler who sleeps with anyone in the wrestling business. Bliss was called out on TheDirty.com and here is the quote:
“THE DIRTY ARMY: Nik, I am currently training with WWE to be a wrestler. We train at NXT in Orlando. A great group of men and women are down here but I have to call out one girl, Alexa Bliss. I wish to stay anonymous but this needs to be out. She is a ring rat as we call it. She sleeps with just about every person who walks in the door here and has slept with trainers, higher ups, wrestlers and whoever else she can get her hands on. I have heard nasty stories I refuse to share. She is cute and nice but is a total slore. She is not very good in the ring but isn’t bad as a manager. I hope she sees this and cleans her act up asap.”
She responded with little more than a tweet:
One Thing my mother always taught me... "Your reputation is something you will NEVER out grow, so make sure it's one you're proud of"— Alexa Bliss (@AlexaBliss_WWE) November 14, 2015
There have been no other accusations similar, so this was likely some anonymous person who just hated her guts.
13 Origin of the Name "Bliss"
Her real name is Alexis Kaufman, so she obviously got "Alexa" from her first name, but the "Bliss" last name is not so simple. Early on in her time with NXT, she was still nailing down a decent gimmick. One of her first was as a southern belle, with the accent and all, and it fit her fairly well (not as well as Harley Quinn, but that new look is hard to beat). One of her consistent phrases was "bless your heart" and when she said it with a southern accent, she said it sounded like "bliss" and added that she liked that she could use terms like "blissed off" for some wordplay and the name stuck. It was a lucky twist of fate, but one that landed her a ring name that she continues to use today.
12 Experience in Other Sports
Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, wrestling was somewhat of a natural career choice for Alexis Kaufman, as she has grown up playing sports and keeping herself active. She has played softball in her youth, along with competitive gymnastics, and achieved great success in cheerleading in her teens. She was a Division I cheerleader and was a member of the Step One AllStars in Ohio, which is one of the most highly regarded teams in the area. She could also probably mangle plenty of people, as she has trained in kickboxing over the years, making her transition to the wrestling industry a little bit easier as she already had experience in a combat sport. There's no denying that it's an easier to throw a kick in wrestling if you have a background in actual kickboxing.
11 Her Favorite Wrestlers
She's been watching wrestling her entire life and has tried to emulate the careers and in-ring presences of some of her favorites. Her whole family was into it and she has said that they were all fans of Stone Cold Steve Austin and Trish Stratus. While she liked these two, the performers she identified with the most were Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio. She recalled being impressed by his experience in Mexican wrestling and the style he brought to WWE. She considered his high-flying performances to be similar to gymnastics and naturally chose him as a favorite. They are also on the smaller side (Rey Mysterio at 5'6 and about 170 pounds, Bliss at about 5'1 and 102 pounds); often taking on comparatively larger competition.
10 Her Workout Music
Anyone who's ever stepped foot in a gym with the intent of making any "sick gains", knows that a good workout can be achieved by just getting in there and letting the weights feel you, but a great workout has a mean playlist that gets your blood pumping. Alexa Bliss' favorite workout tunes aren't anything too heavy, but rather music she's into that keeps her in a good mood. She's said that her favorite exercise tunes include just about anything by Aerosmith, Bowling for Soup and the song "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness. While any workout that includes Alexa Bliss sounds awesome, the tracks she's talking about sound good for a session of weights any day.
9 How Tiny She Really Is
We actually hinted at this early, and while she has a fit, muscular frame, Alexa Bliss is under 5'1 and only slightly above 100 pounds in weight, as she's listed at 102 pounds. This puny frame does nothing to limit her larger than life persona and attitude in the ring and her size is more than made up for by her strength. To put this in perspective, however, she is actually the second smallest diva of all time. The smallest of all time, you ask? None other than Terri Runnels who was about five feet tall and just 100 pounds. Like we said, she may be tiny, but she can use every inch and pound of her small frame to put some serious hurt on just about any of the other ladies in WWE right now.
8 Her Boyfriend
This one is kind of painful (very painful), so sorry fellas, but this beautiful blonde babe is taken, for the time being at least. Come on though, did you really think a stunner like Alexa Bliss didn't have a couple of suitors?
Her dedicated fans will most definitely know this (especially ones who watched NXT), but most casual fans are still unaware that she has been dating a fellow wrestler for some time. Australian Matthew Adams, known in-ring as Buddy Murphy, is her boyfriend and they have been publicly dating since around this time back in 2015, when she was serving as his tag team's valet. At this point, she is the bigger star of the duo, as he is still back in NXT, where he is a one-time Tag Team Champion.
7 Inspiration for Harley Quinn Gimmick?
There is no doubt that Alexa Bliss has been a far better talent since turning heel last year. As a face she wasn't all that special, but her personality, looks and moves are more suited to her as a bad girl. A fan of comic books and many evil characters, especially Harley Quinn, and after the hype around the Suicide Squad movie, she wanted to try out an outfit that would emulate that character.
She mentioned this to boyfriend Buddy Murphy, who had recently dressed up as Two-Face in NXT, and together they made the entire gimmick happen. She said part of why they managed to get this going was the experience the two of them had trying out various gimmicks and costumes while in NXT.
6 Triple H's WrestleMania XXX Entrance
While she only made her debut on the main roster of SmackDown earlier this year, Alexa Bliss' first actual appearance at a WWE show was over two years ago at WrestleMania XXX in New Orleans. Triple H had a very memorable entrance to the ring that evening in which he came out disguised in sinister looking golden armor with three beautiful women accompanying him. One of those women (the short one, no kidding right?) was Alexa Bliss. The other two were actually Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks, also women who became successful on WWE's main roster after their successful time in NXT. Charlotte is the current WWE Raw Women's Champion, while Sasha Banks is already a two-time winner of the belt, though she lost it back to Charlotte both times.
5 She Loves Disney
Yes, like many adult women out there (and some men, for sure) Alexa Bliss has loved Disney movies since her youth and her enthusiasm for the stories and the catchy tunes hasn't gone away as she has matured. Her love of Disney is part of why she says she loves being a wrestler. She considers female wrestler to be strong, tough, and empowering, and wants her career to be an inspiration to younger girls; showing them that women can be beautiful and elegant but also physically empowered. Having lived in Florida for several years, she regularly goes to Disney World and her trips can be seen on Instagram and Twitter. While she loves all the Disney princesses, she has also said that she has a soft spot for Sulley; the big, fluffy, blue dude from Monsters Inc.
4 Suffered from an Eating Disorder
She doesn't have a lot of negative stuff to say about her youth and early life, but Bliss has said that her adolescent years involved some dark times with a serious eating disorder. While she never specifically said which eating disorder it was (not that it really matters), she did say that she became very sick at one point; having dropped down to a dangerously low weight and a heart rate of about 28 beats per minute. She was taken to hospital at that point and she credits a team of doctors with saving her life. She said that this was an eye opening experience and that she subsequently learned to love herself and her body. It is also one of the events of her life that pointed her in the direction of bodybuilding. One of her outside the ring interests now is offering help and support for women who suffer from eating disorders.
3 Bodybuilding Career
As we just said, her bodybuilding career started out as a way for her to gain some weight after her scare with her eating disorder. She was able to go professional with her new passion within a year, an incredibly impressive feat, and participated in The Arnold Sports Festival bodybuilding tournament a few times. She's actually competed against Dana Brooke, who currently competes over on Raw, in competition a few times and finished her career after finishing fourteenth at the 2013 Arnold Classic.
She has said (and this may be somewhat of a no-brainer due to the huge number of bodybuilders who have succeeded in the wrestling business) that the discipline and ruthless singular focus she needed to compete successfully in bodybuilding has been a great asset for her wrestling career.
2 Wrestling is the Hardest Thing She's Ever Done
We've already made a half decent case to prove that Alexis Kaufman is one tough girl, inside and outside of the ring. She may be tiny, but she works hard and has put her body to challenges all her life. From gymnastics to cheerleading (both tough, and competitive by the way) and of course bodybuilding, she has said, in her own words that "nothing you do can prepare you for the toll this takes on your body. This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done." Obviously she digs the challenge or she wouldn't have made it this far, but in comparison to everything else, wrestling is the hardest. This isn't surprising, everyone who is a fan knows that "choreographed" doesn't mean fake and that these people are athletes of the absolute highest caliber.
1 Got Grounded Over Attitude Era Language
Growing up, her entire family were wrestling fans. She became the most fanatical, but the rest of her family were enthusiasts as well. By her recollection, growing up they were all fans of Stone Cold Steve Austin, but who wasn't, right?
She has a great story about a time when the world of pro wrestling got her in trouble with her parents. Her mother once told her, quite forcefully, to clean her room. While most kids would sulk, walk away, and go clean up, she told her mom she had two words for her: "suck it!" She was grounded for a while and was not allowed to watch wrestling at home; and started to go over to her grandparents' house to get her fix. Grandparents are the best.
