It was an exciting night in Osaka Japan as Chris Jericho officially challenged Kenny Omega to a match at Wrestle Kingdom 12.
The announcement comes following Omega’s successful defense against Trent Barreta at Power Struggle on Sunday night. After Baretta’s defeat, Omega toured the ring asking if there were any other competitors brave enough to challenge him. Just as it seemed nobody would step up and Omega began to leave the ring, Jericho appeared on the big screen with a personal challenge for Omega.
"Kenny Omega. What a dynamic performer. What a fantastic, tremendous performer,” Jericho began after a three-second countdown and holding a picture of Omega. “But he's not the best in the world," he said while tearing up Omega’s photo. "I am."
"So many have claimed to be the best, from Shawn Michaels, to Edge, to CM Punk, but they're all gone and I'm still here. Because I am the best in the world. I am the greatest of all time. I am the alpha of this business. And I'm gonna prove it - because I'm challenging you, Kenny. Jericho vs. Kenny. Alpha vs. Omega. To see who is really the best. I wanna meet you," he intoned before pausing for dramatic effect. "Jan. 4, 2018 at Wrestle Kingdom 12 at the Tokyo Dome. So let's see who's really the best, bitch."
For those paying attention, the challenge comes as no surprise. The two champion wrestlers have been talking smack on Twitter for the past few weeks, with Jericho threatening to end his career.
Hate to be fired and forced to go to the “majors”.You guys come off about as cool as Gedo’s haircut & red pajamas.Stay out of our business.— Kenny Omega (@KennyOmegamanX) November 4, 2017
It seems Jericho is now going to try to end Omega the old-fashioned way: by defeating him in the ring.
Wrestle Kingdom 12 will mark Jericho’s first return to New Japan Pro Wrestling since 1997, and his first match outside of WWE since 2000 when he fought Eddie Guerro in a match for World Xtreme Wrestling. Jericho’s most recent wrestling appearance was on a July episode of Smackdown where he fought AJ Styles and Kevin Owens in a Triple Threat match for the United States Championship belt. Styles would ultimately walk away victorious from that match.
Omega is a rising star with New Japan Pro Wrestling, having been a one-time IWGP Intercontinental Champion, two-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, one-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champion, and a two-time NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champion.
Omega currently holds the United States Heavyweight Championship.
