AEW President Tony Khan hinted that AEW would be doing something unique with the dark match footage from tv shows. Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes made the official announcement today.

Rhodes tweeted, "BREAKING: "AEW DARK" begins this Tuesday!" Featuring matches fans at home didn't get to see during the AEW: Dynamite broadcasts on TNT, the company will compile those matches and offer them to YouTube viewers.

The name "AEW Dark" comes from the popular wrestling phrase "dark matches" which describe matches that takes place when the lights of the cameras aren't rolling for live television. Fans in the audience get more value than just the two hour show that makes tv, they get to see two or three matches after the fact, often showcasing talent that weren't on that week's episode.

Khan said during a media scrum after the debut episode of AEW: Dynamite, that he was proud of the roster the company has built but that in a two-hour show that will continue to feature longer matches, many of the roster won't make the show every week. AEW: Dark will be a way for fans to see their favorites, including the talent that filled that two-hour program.

Online Makes Sense for AEW

Consider AEW was really born out of the popularity of The Young Bucks online presence, it makes sense that the wrestling company would continue to use platforms like YouTube to offer their product. Their television deal with TNT doesn't include a payment from the network, just an opportunity to earn revenue through advertising. Why not take your second show to your online fans and cross promote?

Already with close to half-a-million subscribers, showcasing matches fans couldn't see on TNT is sure to bump their subscriber count in a big way.
