The WWE is the top wrestling company in the world today (it may not put on the best shows, but in terms of revenue and crowd attendance, there’s no other promotion that can compete with the WWE), and for the most part, they have the biggest and best characters. One of the most important parts of a wrestlers arsenal in the WWE is the finishing move, but not all of them can be impressive. Along with a good look and a great entrance, the finishing move is the most important part of a wrestlers success in the WWE. Unfortunately, for every Stone Cold Stunner, there’s a Weapon of Mass Destruction, and that’s no different in today’s wrestling landscape.

In this article, we take a look at the current crop talent from all shows whether it's NXT, 205 Live, Raw or SmackDown Live. High profile talents such as AJ Styles, Finn Balor and Seth Rollins all made this list for different reasons. We'll also look at several female talents and where their finisher lands - Alexa Bliss and Becky Lynch are among those we'll look at.

This one is completely up to opinion, so feel free to disagree with us, and let us know in the comments down below what you think are some of the most impressive or most boring finishing moves in the WWE today. Read on as we take a look at 10 wrestling finishers in the WWE today that we can’t take seriously, and 10 that we absolutely love.

20 Can't Take Serious – Unprettier (Tyler Breeze)

via dailyddt.com

Tyler Breeze is one in the long line of stars from NXT that just haven’t got over on the main roster and most of that is due to booking. The Breeze character certainly did have it’s limitations, and one of those was his lack of creative moves, especially given the athleticism that Prince Pretty possesses.

His booking in NXT was absolutely fantastic, and he was even elevated to the point where he was chosen to wrestle Jushin “Thunder” Liger in his first and only appearance within the WWE, but just weeks after his debut on the main roster, we could tell that WWE had no interest in pushing him as a singles star. It has resulted in him being delegated into a comedy tag team alongside Fandango.

The tag team now known as the Fashion Police got themselves over so much on Smackdown Live, but the WWE obviously wasn’t interested in it.

Although we don’t see Breeze as a singles competitor anymore, his finisher is still dreadful, as it’s nothing more than a copy of Christian's finisher.

When you combine all of the negatives (his size, poor finisher), it’s clear that Vince McMahon was never going to push him, even as a mid-card star.

19 Love – Claymore/Zig Zag

via wwe.com

This is the only tag team move that features on this list, and it’s also the latest one to be debuted in the WWE. Individually, these moves probably would have found their way onto the other side of the list, but when Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre join their finishers together, they created a brutal and beautiful combination. The move is yet to have it’s own name.

There are other great tag team moves out there in WWE today, whether it be the Shatter Machine from The Revival or The Midnight Hour by The New Day, but there’s just something about this that looks so legitimately brutal.

With the combined potential of the team now reportedly being known as ‘The Show’, it’s one we’ll be seeing for quite some time now.

As we said, individually, the moves look quite average, as Drew uses a simple running kick (he has the Future Shock DDT for big matches, but uses this in most of his bouts) to end matches, but when it’s used in combination with the Zig Zag, it looks seriously cool and very devastating. It’s one we can’t wait to see more of as the two continue their domination over the RAW brand.

18 Can’t take serious – The Accolade

via skysports.com

Rusev is one of the biggest stars that the WWE have, and he has a fan following that’s matched by few on the main roster today. However, for some reason, the WWE don’t even want to book him as a star in the mid-card. With other people like Tyler Breeze or Mike Kannellis, we can kind of see why, but in Rusev’s case, we have absolutely no idea why he isn’t being pushed in the SmackDown Live main event. Sure, you’ve got guys like Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan and Shinsuke Nakamura but Rusev combines a great look with charisma and in ring talent. We are as equally confused as the rest of you, but maybe it has something to do with his finisher?

Sure, a heel shouldn’t have a fancy high-flying finisher (especially when he’s a super heavyweight like the Bulgarian Brute), but the Camel Clutch has been way overused in WWE history.

With someone as big, powerful and athletic as Rusev, we're sure that the WWE could find a much more impressive and appropriate finisher. Perhaps one day, the Bulgarian Brute could win the WWE Championship in order to properly celebrate Rusev Day.

17 Love – Disarm-her

via wwe.com

There are some impressive submission finishing moves in the WWE today and most of them look fantastic, but none look more brutal and believable than Tommasso Ciampa and Becky Lynch’s Dis-arm-her (clearly not named the same thing, but as Lynch is on the main roster and has the higher profile, we’ll credit it with her naming). It’s a simple wrench on the arm, but when delivered quickly, it’s a pain that most people in the audience can relate too (perhaps another reason why we all buy so much into Pete Dunne, because the cracking of fingers and other things are so relateable to fans). It looks absolutely devastating.

Lynch hasn’t got the success she deserves on the main roster, particularly over the last 12 months. The fans absolutely love her anyway, and with a great look, a great gimmick and this absolutely tremendous finisher, it’s only a matter of time until the Irish Lass-Kicker is one again a key part of the Smackdown Live women’s division. Fans have suggested that Lynch move on to another finishing move if she wishes to become as important as she once was, but her submission is brutal and great to watch. If they can once again book her as the dominant ass-kicker, she’ll be just as important as the likes of Charlotte and Asuka.

16 Can’t take serious – DDT (Alexa Bliss)

via wwe.com

Alexa Bliss is one of the breakout stars of the current women’s revolution in the WWE, and that’s on the back of her great look (despite the very small stature that many thought would plague her on the main roster) and incredible promo work. Even though she’s not as good as others in the ring, she has enough skills to get by, but her finisher is one of the weakest in wrestling today.

Back in the day when kayfabe existed, the moves came secondary to the stories being told in the ring, and as the fans completely bought into what was happening. The performers didn’t have to go over the top with the moves, and therefore a simple dropkick or DDT would look brutal and make someone a star, and it worked for the likes of Jake “The Snake” Roberts. For the modern day, it’s just not believable. We see a lot of performers on the roster use the exact same DDT (and even in some cases, more elaborate ones) half way through a match, and their opponents will kick out. Bliss using the move as a finisher just takes away from her impact as a superstar, and as she’s obviously a big part of WWE’s plans going forward - we hope she can find something better soon.

15 Love – Lumbar Check

via 2bitsports.com

The Cruiserweight division has been absolutely phenomenal in recent times, especially since both Triple H and Drake Maverick became involved with 205 Live. After winning a tournament that culminated at WrestleMania, Cedric Alexander is now the reigning Cruiserweight Champion, and although his arsenal consists mainly of jaw-dropping aerial attacks, his finisher is absolutely devastating. It is one that looks like it could seriously put a wrestler on the shelf.

He sets it up in different ways, but it’s basically double knees straight to an opponents spine. If any untrained person were to take this maneuver, it would seriously injure them, but Alexander uses it perfectly and it looks like a brutal move that would put anyone away.

He may not have the charisma of some performers in the Cruiserweight division, but Ceddy is absolutely fantastic inside of the ring. His finishing move shows just how versatile and impressive he is. If he sticks with it in the WWE, he could be a major star in the future, not only in the Cruiserweight division, but on RAW or SmackDown too.

14 Can’t take serious – Spear

via ewrestling.news

Once upon a time, the spear was one of the best and most impactful finishers in wrestling. Whether it’s due to the overuse of the move, or the fact that we just don’t like seeing Roman Reigns win matches with it, we just can’t take it seriously anymore.

Everyone from Goldberg, Rhyno, Edge, Batista and The Big Show have used the spear throughout their tenures in WWE, and while there’s nothing essentially wrong with Roman Reigns’ use of the move in comparison to others - it’s just been so overused over the past two decades. We can no longer take it seriously as a finishing move.

His other finishing move, the Superman Punch isn’t much better. While it looks good, it’s just not that believable as a final move, considering that wrestlers get punched in the face all the time.

We think the spear isn’t too bad in comparison, but overall, it’s a move that we’d be happy to not see ever again, because at this point, it’s as overused as a super kick.

At this point in time, we don’t know what move we’d prefer to see Roman use. The WWE are going to continue doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results, but anything other than a spear would be preferable at this point.

13 Love – Black Mass

via wwe.com

We’ve criticized the Shining Wizard for being a simple straight kick, and while the Black Mass, used by current NXT Champion Aleister Black is kind of similar (it’s a spinning heel kick but with a much greater effect in comparison to Adam Cole's kick), it just looks so brutal because of the power, the precision and the timing that it has (and it also helps that it’s the most protected move in all of NXT - yup, Triple H is high on the guy).

Black is a superstar in the making, as he’s had plenty of high profile matches in NXT, with absolutely all of them smash hits.

Each and every one has finished in the exact same manner, with a Black Mass, and thus it’s one of the most brutal and believable finishers on the roster.

Sure, people get kicked in the face all the time, but the way performers sell the Black Mass makes it look so much more devastating than any other kick used in the WWE.

By the time he gets to the main roster, it’s a move that we think could realistically put away Roman Reigns, it’s that protected and believable.

12 Can’t take serious – Helluva Kick

via wwe.com

Sami Zayn is still the greatest performer in NXT history (argue with me if you like, but you really can’t deny The Heart and Soul), but his booking on the main roster until he hooked up with his best friend Kevin Owens was horrendous. He’s still yet to find any championship success and we can’t blame it on his average finishing move, but it isn’t one of the best in today’s WWE.

Like so many other contrived finishing moves, the Helluva Kick requires Zayn’s opponent to be in a specific spot.

Something like that hurts the fans ability to suspend their disbelief, as his opponent would just not go into the corner and stand there while he prepares his kick if they wanted to avoid it, this factor needs to change.

Zayn is a tremendous performer no matter what position you place him in, and with the Blue Thunder Bomb as one of his signatures, it would be an effective finisher over the Helluva Kick. While it looks good, it’s just too contrived (not quite as bad as Alberto Del Rio’s top rope stomp) to be one we love.

11 Love – Pop-up Powerbomb

via arabic.sport360.com

Kevin Owens is one of the most talented performers in WWE today, and although his match quality as of late hasn’t been as good as it was when he first debuted on the main roster, he’s still fantastic to watch. When it’s sold properly, his finishing move, the pop-up powerbomb looks incredibly devastating, and it’s a move that we definitely wouldn’t ever want to take. Sure, it gets countered a lot, but most finishing moves do these days. That doesn’t take away from the brutality of impact when he does hit it.

Yes, it’s a simple move but the pop-up variation makes it look like one of the more unique finishers going around. Owens also has a variation of his own, and that’s when he uses this powerbomb on the apron for big spots. When it’s sold properly by the likes of Sami Zayn or Daniel Bryan, it makes him look like even more of a heel but most importantly, it puts over the move as even more devastating. It’s one of those simple moves but when it’s done great, can come out of nowhere and puts people away.

10 Can’t take serious – The Khallas

via youtube.com

Jinder Mahal was nothing more than glorified enhancement talent throughout his entire first run with the WWE. When he returned after the latest brand split, it looked like he would be returning to that original role, but with the WWE looking to break into the lucrative Indian market, they decided to push Mahal all the way to the WWE Championship. Even when no one in the entire WWE Universe bought into the Modern Day Maharajah being a main even level player.

His finisher isn’t the worst on this list, but a simple slam like the Khallas is a terrible move to finish matches with.

After his bouts with Shinsuke Nakamura and Randy Orton, which saw him do nothing the whole match, get the Singh’s to interfere and hit the Khallas for the win, we hate it even more!

Sure, Mahal looks in great shape, but that’s about the only positive that you can draw from Jinder. His promo’s are often boring, and sometimes, they’re just plain weird. Not to mention his in ring skills are some of the worst in the WWE today - so we guess that it’s fairly appropriate that his finisher is one of the worst in the game too.

9 Love – The Phenomenal Forearm

via sportskeeda.com

The biggest criticism of many of the finishers that feature on the opposite side of this list is that they just look too plain and look like they don’t hurt enough. With any other superstar, a simple springboard forearm may fall into that category, but AJ Styles makes everything inside a wrestling ring look beautiful. The move that was once a simple, early in the match forearm, is now one of the most believable and good looking finishers in the entire WWE.

Sure, he still has the Styles Clash and the Calf Crusher that he can pull out at any time, and having such an array of moves has obviously helped in big bouts with the likes of Brock Lesnar and John Cena.

However, the Phenomenal Forearm has finished some of the best in WWE today and it just looks so brutal when delivered in the unique way that AJ moves inside a ring.

When he debuted the move in WWE, Styles took to the WWE Universe to name the move, and it’s sad that the best they could come up with is ‘Phenomenal Forearm’. Either way, Styles is one of the best in the world today, and as such, he can make even the most simple of moves look so incredibly effective.

8 Can’t take serious – Attitude Adjustment

via givemesport.com

John Cena, whether the hardcore wrestling fans like it or not will go down as one of the greatest wrestlers to ever step foot inside a WWE ring. Due to his booking over the last 15 years, he will always be seen as WWE’s superman, but his finishing move, the AA, formerly known as the FU is just terrible. It looks like it wouldn’t hurt anyone, let alone a wrestler who takes kicks, punches and elbows to the face during every match.

It’s a simple standing Fireman’s carry, and it looks so weak.

Plus people counter and kick out of it so often these days that we just simply can’t take it seriously anymore even though Cena still looks as good these days as he ever has during his time in the WWE.

His other finisher isn’t that good either, as his SFTU, now just STF is one of the weakest submission finishers in WWE history. Although this hasn’t effected Cena’s career too much, as he’s still been the face of the top wrestling company in the world for almost two decades now, his weak finishers have always been one of the biggest criticisms. That’s without mentioning the horrendous springboard stunner he debuted several years ago.

7 Love – End of Days

via skysports.com

Baron Corbin may not be one of the top stars in the WWE today, and his in ring performances aren’t as good as the likes of Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Finn Balor or others in the main event of Monday Night RAW. However, his two signature moves are fantastic, and no matter who they are used on, they look impressive.

The first is the ‘Deep Six’, which is a variation on Sami Zayn’s Blue Thunder Bomb, but takes the opponent from a running start into the move. When used on more athletic performers (like Rey Mysterio in the Greatest Royal Rumble), it looks absolutely incredible.

Most people are happy with one fantastic signature move, but Corbin has two, with the other being the End of Days. While he’s botched this a couple of times, it still looks devastating and absolutely beautiful. If he continues looking so menacing with his finishers, the WWE will no doubt look to push him as a top heel in the near future.

He’s going to have to overcome some of the problems that have obviously been plaguing him backstage. We're talking about the ones which caused him to fail to cash in the Money in the Bank briefcase in 2017. To his credit, Vince McMahon is reportedly still very high on him, and with the recent move to RAW, he could be a big time star by the time 2018 is done.

6 Can’t take serious – Bayley-to-Belly

via pinterest.com

Bayley is one of the most important women in the WWE during their current revolution. During her time down in NXT, she put on some of the best matches in WWE, male or female, main roster or NXT, and her series with Sasha Banks may go down as some of the best matches overall in WWE history. However, there’s one thing that’s off about Bayley, and it’s her terribly bland finishing move, the Bayley-to-Belly, a simple suplex.

Sure, the ‘hugging’ of the opponent definitely fits into Bayley’s character, so she has to be commended for sticking to her gimmick like that. Though, after some of the incredible moves that she pulled out in order to defeat ‘The Boss’ for her NXT Championship, including a reverse ‘rana from the top rope, using a simple suplex like that kind of made the finishes fall a bit flat on some occasions.

No one in WWE these days is going to reinvent the wheel when it comes to finishing moves, or moves at all, because it’s all been done. Regardless, there are much more effective moves that Bayley can use. While she needs plenty of help to get back on the right track in WWE, a change to her finisher would be one of the best moves she could make.

5 Love – Curb Stomp/Black out

via pinterest.com

Seth Rollins could go down as one of the greatest performers in WWE history by the time it’s all said and done. He has everything it takes to be a star in the WWE: charisma, great in ring work, athleticism, crowd connection and a fantastic look, but the thing he was most known for in his early days was his finisher, The Curb Stomp.

After banning it for a few years, the WWE have decided to bring it back. During the time it was banned, the King Slayer used his mentors move, a Pedigree, and following that, The King’s Landing (a rip-cord into a knee strike, eerily similar to a move used by New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Kenny Omega). However, just this year, he returned the Curb Stomp to the delight of the WWE Universe. It was referred to as the Blackout, a tribute to his time as ‘Tyler Black’ in Ring of Honor.

We are ecstatic to see the fantastic move returned, and as long as no one sues the WWE for their kids using it in the playground, it won’t be banned again. Such a finishing move gives him the edge that he needs to be at the top of his game.

4 Can’t take serious – Coup De Grace

via scoopnest.com

Finn Balor is one of the biggest stars that the WWE has on their current roster. Even if he hasn’t been given his rightful rematch for the Universal Championship, a title belt which he never lost, he’s got everything that the WWE would want in a top star. That's except for his finishing move, which isn’t as good as it’s made out to be by the WWE.

Obviously they are trying to push it as Balor is one of the brightest stars they’ve had in quite some time.

Realistically, diving and landing on someone feet first could actually hurt someone quite a bit, but done safely like The Demon performs it just makes it look boring. It's not worthy of a performer of his caliber.

He also has the 1916, which looks much cooler, but that’s not an appropriate finisher for him. If he does indeed intend to use The Demon on big shows like he did down in NXT, he needs something that will contribute to the aura that the character gives off. While we don’t exactly have a solution for Balor in this regard, we know something has to change, because the stomp from the top rope just isn’t good enough.

3 Love – Kinshasa

via wwe.com

Shinsuke Nakamura had a phenomenal career in Japan before he made his way to the WWE. As the ‘King of Strong Style’, he obviously had to have a phenomenal, hard-hitting finishing maneuver, and so what he used was originally known as the Bomaye, but for PG reasons, the WWE changed the name to Kinshasa.

No matter the name (and the change has definitely helped somewhat, as Corey Graves call of “KINSHASA” has become iconic, and helped Nakamura get over with the WWE Universe), it still looks as beautiful as it does brutal. It put away some of the best performers in the WWE today.

As of late, Shinsuke has resorted to using a simple low-blow to AJ Styles following his heel turn at WrestleMania. Now that he’s been able to show off more of an attitude, his moves have even more of an impact.

The King of Strong Style has the ability to be the greatest Japanese superstar to ever set foot in a WWE ring, and the running knee strike known as Kinshasa is one of the reasons why. It’s one of the most believable and impressive finishing moves in the WWE today, especially when you combine it with all of Nakamura’s style and flair.

2 Can’t take serious – Shining Wizard

via thechairshot.com

Adam Cole is one of the biggest stars in NXT today, and with The Undisputed Era by his side, it looks like he’s on his way to some very lofty heights in the WWE. To get to that point, he needs to find something better than a Shining Wizard to finish people off, because at this point, it just seems very anti-climactic to end his matches that way.

Unlike many other guys and girls that have come in to NXT from the independent scene, Cole’s appeal isn’t his in ring work (although that’s usually fantastic, as you’ve seen from the Ladder match which crowned him NXT North American Champion, and his Street Fight with Aleister Black), it’s his presence and charisma as a performer. However, that will only get you so far, and he needs a new finishing move.

His arsenal throughout matches is really good, because his presence as a character will always draw you into his matches no matter what moves he’s performing. He just needs to find a better finisher, because if he does, he will solidify his place as a future main eventer on the main roster - he is just that good.

1 Love – The Eclipse

via skysports.com

This is by far the most dangerous and creative finishing move in the WWE today, and with Ember Moon’s potential as a superstar in the RAW women’s division, it could go down as one of the greatest finishing moves in WWE history. Sure, Steve Austin’s stunner was one of the biggest moves in wrestling history, and we’ve seen plenty of imitations over the years (John Cena’s being the worst), but Moon’s leaping, cork-screw stunner is a thing of beauty. Ever since her first date in NXT, the fans have gone absolutely crazy for it.

Moon has only just been called up to Monday Night RAW, and with Nia Jax, Alexa Bliss, Ronda Rousey and the Riott Squad all in front of her, her path to the title will be equally as hard as it was in NXT.

However, with The Eclipse and the rest of her hard-hitting arsenal, we can definitely see her rising to the top before the year 2018 is out.

It’s hard to do something original in wrestling these days, as there is only so many moves that can be performed inside the squared-circle. Moon has managed to incorporate several innovative moves in to her arsenal, and these days, we think it would be quite impossible for us to see The Eclipse and not have our jaws hit the ground.
