Rumors have begun circling that WWE’s strange booking of Daniel Brayn could be to potentially sabotage the insanely popular star in the event he leaves to wrestle in the indies.
It’s been nearly two full years since SmackDown general manager Daniel Bryan announced his retirement from in-ring competition. However, Bryan has worked extensively at trying to get cleared by doctors, in hopes of coming out of retirement to wrestle once again.
In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Bryan dropped a major bomb by saying that if he doesn’t “wrestle by WrestleMania, (he), probably won’t be wrestling with WWE at all.”
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), chimed in with a strong opinion on the matter. He believes WWE could turn Bryan heel “if they think he’s leaving,” since “the heel turn would hurt his mainstream value to a degree.” Here’s what else Meltzer said:
“As far as the indie fan base, it’ll mean nothing and there’s no way a WWE storyline turn will register once he’s gone from WWE. But I sense WWE realizes that, and Bryan being a big star on the indie scene can’t be stopped, but the idea that Bryan draws a new WWE fan base as its most likable character to the indie scene, that’s the goal to stop.”
For those who haven’t followed, Bryan has looked traveled the country looking for opinions from doctors, and an overwhelming amount have reportedly told him he’s good to go. But last month, it was reported that Vince McMahon will only clear Bryan if WWE doctor Joseph Maroon gives him the green light.
Bryan originally had to retire when WWE wouldn’t clear him in 2016, following a series of concussions and a located brain legion. Bryan reportedly asked WWE to release him so he could head over to another promotion to wrestle, but the company refused and talked him into hanging up the boots.
Bryan’s contract with WWE expires in September, so he will be able to control where he goes if they refuse to let him wrestle. But Meltzer’s latest take on the situation is very eye-catching and worth keeping an eye on in the immediate future.
With WrestleMania 34 just three months away, fans won’t have to wait long to find out what Bryan’s possible return to the WWE ring will be.
