Many WWE fans were stunned and disappointed when "The Fiend's" undefeated streak ended at the hands of Goldberg at Super ShowDown, just weeks before WrestleMania 36.

Bray Wyatt had never lost cleanly with his new alter ego, and he looked poised to carry the Universal Championship into the Show of Shows. But WWE made the questionable decision to have a part-time performer come in and put him away.

The plan was for Wyatt to defend his title against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania. So why did WWE move away from that plan and have Goldberg end The Fiend's streak?

Citing sources, Bill Pritchard of WrestleZone reports that Goldberg's victory over Wyatt "was a last-minute decision." The WWE Hall of Famer also "bargained for creative control and pushed for" a victory because Goldberg believed it would damage his character if he lost.

It was also noted that with Wyatt portraying a monster character, Goldberg believed it was important for the youth audience to see him walk away as the winner, thus maintaining the "superhero" status. The Fiend also agreed to the booking decision, per Pritchard.

The Fiend was able to recover from the loss by defeating John Cena in a Firefly Fun House match at WrestleMania 36. Goldberg was initially slated to face Reigns, but the latter pulled himself out due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. Goldberg faced Braun Strowman instead, with the Monster Among Men capturing his first Universal Championship.

It remains to be seen what will happen next with Goldberg. There aren't any upcoming dates for him in WWE, and retirement could be a possibility.

Strowman Helped WWE Climb Out Of This

Having Goldberg defeat The Fiend was an unpopular storyline to begin with. WWE wound up having to alter their WrestleMania plans several times here, but fortunately, Strowman managed to help them get out of it. He's been over with the fans for a while now, and Strowman has the makings to be a worthy and deserving champion. And of course, the Fiend and Reigns will both get championship opportunities down the road.
