WWE may have something special in mind when it comes to Dolph Ziggler and what The Showoff may be doing come WrestleMania.
What exactly is going on with Dolph Ziggler in WWE right now is unclear. The WWE veteran finally reached a place of note on the roster when he defeated Baron Corbin and Bobby Roode in a triple threat match for the United States Championship. Then just 48 hours later Ziggler placed the title in the middle of the ring and walked away.
One week later there was no sign of the US Champ so SmackDown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan assumed that the title had been vacated. Since then a tournament has been going on to decide who will claim the vacant title. Roode, Jinder Mahal, and Xavier Woods have all made it to the final four of the tournament with one spot still available.
The final of the tournament will take place at the Royal Rumble, but according to Wrestle Votes it may not be as straightforward as crowning a new champion. Once the tournament is over there are rumors that Ziggler will then return and claim that he never vacated the title and that he is the rightful United States Champion. That will then begin a build to a showdown at WrestleMania akin to the ladder match Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon had at WrestleMania X to decide who the rightful Intercontinental Champion was.
Not exactly sure where this Dolph Ziggler US Title angle is going but one idea I've heard is to mirror the WrestleMania X ladder match dual belt storyline. A new US champ is crowned, Ziggler returns as "rightful" champ and both belts hang during ladder match. We shall see...— WrestleVotes (@WrestleVotes) December 28, 2017
WWE's booking of Ziggler has been confusing and frankly a little boring as of late. The last time they managed to drum up any interest in the tenured Superstar was when he put his career on the line against The Miz. Once again The Showoff is involved in an angle that might end up with him leaving WWE and it has captured the WWE Universe's interest. Ziggler may legitimately want to leave WWE and that's why this angle would work so well if it happens.
One thing is for certain and that is the United States Title needs something to make it feel special. John Cena can't defend it in open challenges forever. If the double title angle is the way WWE are going with this then the championship would not only have a prominent place on the WrestleMania 34 card, but also in the build to The Showcase of the Immortals.
