The United States Championship was defended in a triple threat match at Clash Of Champions and the title unexpectedly changed hands.

The main selling point behind WWE's Clash Of Champions pay-per-view is that every single championship on the participating brand is on the line. That was indeed the case this past Sunday night. All four of SmackDown Live's titles were up for grabs from AJ Styles' WWE Championship to The Usos' Tag Team Titles.

That of course included the United States Championship as well. It would probably be fair to say that the triple threat including Bobby Roode, Dolph Ziggler, and Baron Corbin wasn't exactly highly anticipated. Fair play to all three men though, they opened the show and put on one hell of a match. By the end of it, fans likely believed that anybody could be walking away with the win.

While that might have very well been the case, it's also fair to say that the least likely party wound up walking out with the United States Championship. It looked as if Bobby Roode had things wrapped up, then Baron Corbin almost had things in the bag, but ultimately the WWE stalwart Dolph Ziggler managed to pick up the win. The Showoff is now a two time United States Champion.

The ending to the match was pretty spectacular too. As mentioned above, Corbin nearly had things wrapped up as he went about planting Roode with an End Of Days. He managed that, but as he did it, Ziggler managed to simultaneously hit The Lone Wolf with a Zig Zag. That innovative move proved enough to keep Corbin down for three and win Ziggler the stars and stripes spangled belt.

WWE entrusting Baron Corbin with the US Title seemed like they were done punishing him as they had been over the summer. His lackluster run with the championship likely hasn't got The Lone Wolf completely back in WWE's good books though and now that run has come to an end. Sadly, Roode's inclusion in the match appeared to be nothing more than a spare part, much like Tye Dillinger was in the US Title scene earlier in the year.
