The winner of the 30-man Royal Rumble this Sunday will earn a chance to headline WrestleMania 34 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Right now, Roman Reigns is the favorite to win, with 3/1 odds.
There are a handful of big names that have realistic chances at winning it. Besides Reigns, the likes of John Cena, Braun Strowman, Shinsuke Nakamura and Kevin Owens all seem to be viable contenders to headline the Grandest Stage of Them All.
WWE Hall of Famer Edge did an interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, and shared who he would like to win, and why:
"I love Nakamura, but it's a transition for anybody who comes to WWE. You start him off with Sami at NXT, and talk about having the ultimate meal set for you: you get this amazing selling babyface and get to have this spectacular match...With the proper build, AJ-Nakamura could be the match on last.
"That's why I'd like to see Nakamura win the Rumble. He and AJ would have an amazing match, and that would give a different flavor to WrestleMania."
Nakamura's lackluster tenure since joining the SmackDown Live tenure last year was one of the top WWE stories of 2017. The former face of the NXT brand was expected to receive a major push almost immediately, but he's been forced to stay in the mid-card level more often than not.
Nakamura questionably lost to Jinder Mahal in a WWE Championship match at SummerSlam, and was a major non-factor in the 5-on-5 interbrand match at Survivor Series.
Nonetheless, he's still one of the most beloved superstars on the WWE Roster, receiving major cheers and reactions from the crowd. Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats did speculate that a SmackDown Live star will win the Royal Rumble, which only increases Nakamura's chances.
Owens and Sami Zayn will form a 2-on-1 handicap match against Styles for the WWE Championship this Sunday. If the two best friends win the match, it adds likeliness that a major babyface in Nakamura wins the Royal Rumble.
If Edge and the WWE universe get things their way, Nakamura will finally receive the main event push and (likely), clash with AJ Styles at WrestleMania 34.
