Reason Why Elias Defeated John Cena On Raw Explained

Few things in life are more rare than John Cena losing a match cleanly. The 16-time World Champion rarely loses his bouts, especially to mid-card wrestlers who have yet to get fully over.

But on this week's episode of Monday Night Raw, we saw Cena get pinned by Elias in a Triple Threat Match that also featured Braun Strowman. The match happened two weeks after Elias beat down Cena with his guitar at the Raw 25 Anniversary show.

Look at Cena's recent losses, and you'll see they tend to be against other major stars at pay-per-view shows like AJ Styles and Roman Reigns. So why in the world did he lose to a mid-card superstar on an episode of Raw?

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, the finish was scripted to help get Elias over - and to further enhance and develop his rivalry with Cena. They also had Braun Strowman destroy both men to (surprise, surprise), make him look even more dominant than he already is.

The rumours still suggest that Cena will face The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans. With the show just two months away, Cena's feud with Elias likely won't last much longer.

Elias has been a pleasant surprise since debuting on the main roster last April. Instead of simply being use to provide comedic relief with his singing and guitar skills, the man has started to gain more relevancy as a talented wrestler.

Vince McMahon has given some unexpected pushes over the past year, including Strowman (who's squashed a large portion of his opponents), Jinder Mahal (former WWE Champion), and now Elias.

It'll be interesting to see how the Cena-Elias feud eventually ends. The Elimination Chamber on Feb. 25 is the final pay-per-view for the Raw brand before WrestleMania. Both men have qualified for the six-man match that will determine the opponent of Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship in New Orleans.
