Tag team wrestling has always been one of the most popular forms of professional wrestling, although there are ebbs and flows when promoting it. WWE has had some of the best tag teams in history over the years, but sometimes the company would rather throw two singles stars together and run with them in the short-term, as opposed to build up proper teams.

However, WWE isn’t the only wrestling promotion in the world right now. AEW built itself on the promise that it would take tag team wrestling seriously. Add in TNA, Ring of Honor, MLW, and the NWA, and tag team wrestling is as great today as ever.

10 NWA

Royce Isaacs & Thomas Latimer in an NWA ring.

NWA Power is Billy Corgan’s revival of the oldest wrestling promotion in the United States. Initially, a YouTube only show, NWA Power has now moved to FITE TV and is growing thanks to the partnership.

While there is exceptional talent there, the tag team scene is not the best. The champions have featured names like Aron Stevens & JR Kratos, Eli Drake & James Storm, and Royce Isaacs & Thomas Latimer. There is potential here for considerable growth though, which is exciting.

9 NXT Women

Candice LeRae & Indie Hartwell holding up their NXT tag titles.

NXT created its own women’s tag team titles after the WWE Women’s Champions played fast and loose with the rules to keep the titles while defending them on the black and gold brand.

The first NXT Women’s champions were Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai. Beyond them, the teams of Ember Moon & Shotzi Blackheart and The Way (Candice LeRae & Indie Hartwell) have held the gold since the title was first introduced. It is too early to tell just how successful this division will turn out to be, but expectations are high.

8 MLW

Marshall and Ross Von Erich with the MLW tag team titles.

MLW ranks slightly ahead of NWA because of the quality of legitimate tag teams. The tag teams in the company include two legacy stars in the form of Marshall and Ross Von Erich.

It also includes Mexican legends LA Park and Hijo de La Park. The promotion also features The Dynasty (Hammerstone and Holliday) and Contra Unit (Josef Samael & Jacob Fatu). They are not flashy, but they are real tag teams and deliver great tag team action, delighting purists of tag team wrestling.

7 Ring Of Honor

The Briscoe Brothers with the ROH tag team titles.

As long as The Briscoe Brothers are in Ring of Honor, they will ensure that they rank as a legitimate tag team division. Mark and Jay Briscoe have won the ROH tag titles 11 times and are one of the best tag teams to never attempt to compete in WWE.

The tag teams there are not what they once were though, with the contenders including The Foundation (Rhett Titus and Tracy Williams) and La Faccion Ingobernable (Dragon Lee and Kenny King).

6 WWE Women

Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax walking with the WWE womens tag team titles.

The WWE Women’s Champions defend their titles on both Monday Night Raw and SmackDown. This means that both the Raw and SmackDown rosters are part of the overall WWE women’s tag team roster.

There are top names here including Dana Brooke & Mandy Rose, Naomi & Lana, and Natalya & Tamina. It is talented, but it isn’t as deep as other rosters. This division is also hurt by the fact that a lot of these teams were randomly thrown together.

5 Impact Wrestling

The Good Brothers in an Impact Wrestling ring.

Impact Wrestling has some great tag teams, made even stronger thanks to both former WWE wrestlers joining the promotion, and New Japan tag teams coming over as well. From NJPW, FinJuice showed up and even won the tag titles there. Former WWE tag champs The Good Brothers also worked there as tag champs and make appearances in AEW.

Chris Sabin & James Storm, both tag specialists, joined forces. Violent by Design with Eric Young as manager won the tag titles in 2021.

4 WWE SmackDown

The Street Profits walking to the ring.

Two of the best tag teams in WWE today are on SmackDown, with The Usos and The Street Profits standing head and shoulders above the competition on the blue brand. Bobby Roode & Dolph Ziggler add depth and experience, while Alpha Academy and the Mysterios flesh out a strong division from top to bottom.

The blue brand's tag team division has the perfect blend of youthful energy and experience, elevated by the presence of more than one proper tag team.

3 WWE Raw

The New Day holding up the WWE Raw tag team titles.

Monday Night Raw was always the A-show for WWE, although SmackDown playing on Fox evened out the talent share between the two shows. While a makeshift tag team (AJ Styles and Omos) won the tag titles in 2021, there are still some great tag teams on Raw.

The New Day are the best team in WWE history, with 11 tag team title runs. Miz & Morrison are also present, and their pedigree cannot be denied. RKBro is another makeshift tag team that elevates the division, and Viking Raiders are back and just need a chance.

2 WWE NXT

Imperium standing at attention in WWE NXT.

NXT and NXT UK have some of the best tag teams in wrestling today, often sharing talent between brands. The Rascalz left Impact Wrestling and immediately became top names in NXT as MSK.

Legado Del Fantasma are exciting cruiserweights, the Grizzled Young Veterans as tough brawlers, Imperium has two of the best technical wrestlers in the world, and the promosing tag team of Tommaso Ciampa & Timothy Thatcher also always deliver in the ring. Add in The Way, Breezango, Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch, Gallus, and Ever-Rise, and this is a roster that keeps on giving.

1 AEW

The Young Bucks holding up the AEW tag team titles.

The best tag team roster in the world is in AEW. When the company formed, it promised to deliver the best tag team action in the world and guaranteed they could main event any show along with the singles stars. The Young Bucks were the best tag team in the indies for years and have proven their worth in AEW. The Lucha Bros and the team of Santana & Ortiz dominated promotions around the world before making their way to AEW.

FTR quit WWE and went to AEW because they wanted to compete against the best tag teams in the world. The Good Brothers are Impact Wrestling stars but have split time with AEW. Add in The Butcher & The Blade, The Dark Order, Private Party, The Acclaimed, and Jurassic Express, and there isn’t a deeper, more talented roster in the world.
