The long-awaited reunion of The Shield has finally happened, but should fans be worried? It has basically been a thread that WWE have been building towards for the majority of the summer. It began with Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose joining forces ready to win the Tag Team Championships at SummerSlam. After that, it was really only a matter of time before Roman Reigns joined the festivities and made the trio whole again. This past Monday on Raw we finally came full circle and Reigns, Rollins and Ambrose laid waste to The Miz, Curtis Axel, Sheamus, and Cesaro. Not only that but following the beat down, Kurt Angle announced that the newly reformed Shield's first match will take place at TLC against three of the four men they just laid waste to plus Braun Strowman. The WWE Universe is understandably pretty excited, but let's not get too ahead of ourselves just yet.
The Miz has undergone somewhat of a career renaissance over the last year and a half. Not only has he tallied up a few more Intercontinental Title reigns, but he has also squared off against pretty much everyone and anyone. The last couple of weeks have even seen Miz get the better of Roman Reigns. Well, consider that a parting gift in return for The A Lister's push. Monday night saw the Intercontinental Champion well and truly embarrassed by The Shield. That will happen again next week, then again at TLC six days later. Any Miz fans should really look away now.

Let's not lose sight of the big picture here, or at least the big picture in WWE's eyes. Despite what is going on with The Shield right now, in less than six months time, the main event of WrestleMania 34 is still going to be Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship. While The Shield might stick together until then and even beyond, it's highly unlikely. What WWE will probably be hoping for at this point is for Rollins and Ambrose to provide enough good rub on Roman Reigns that by the time the three of them go their separate ways again come WrestleMania season, we will have all forgotten about his relentless push.
With the above entry in mind and the likelihood of The Shield being broken up within a few months from now, that begs the question how exactly will WWE go about doing that? The three men returning to chasing their own individual goals would be fine, but the break up is unlikely to be that smooth. Someone is probably going to turn heel, and it almost has to be Dean Ambrose. Rollins did it before and is the cover star of the latest video game, and we are well and truly at the point now where Roman Reigns is never going to be a heel. That just leaves the much loved, unhinged, Lunatic Fringe. Brace yourselves Ambrose fans because WWE may be about to make star hard to love.
Whether Ambrose turns heel or not it's almost inevitable that when this Shield reunion comes to an end in a few months from now, all the hard work he and Rollins did recently will be forgotten and undone. Yes, the full reunion this past Monday was an incredible moment that will go down in history, but before that, when Rollins and Ambrose had their mini-reunion they caused quite a stir all on their own. Despite appearing twice on Raw this past Monday, the fact that the two of them are Raw Tag Team Champions wasn't even mentioned, nor were they wearing their titles. As soon as they stood shoulder to shoulder with The Big Dog their accomplishments were overshadowed, and the same will happen again when the three men part ways.
Now we arrive at the most terrifying prospect of all and the real reason that WWE have gifted us this 2017 Shield reunion. They want us to cheer for Roman Reigns, and the plan is already working. When Reigns, Rollins, and Ambrose returned for the second time on Monday night to lay out Braun Strowman, a cheer erupted from the crowd when Reigns nailed The Monster Among Men with a spear. It's really hard not to, we were witnessing one of the greatest factions of the modern era rise from the ashes. Who would have thought that after three years of relentless force feeding all Vince McMahon needed to do was reunite Roman with his former tag team partners? It'll be tricky to wean the WWE Universe off of Shield Reigns and keep them cheering for him during a singles run, but it could happen.
