Finn Balor has become one of the most universally loved WWE superstars over the past 18 months, and his Demon King gimmick is a reason why. With his epic entrance and fancy facepaint and attire, Balor receives some of the loudest ovations from wrestling fans. As such, the idea of him needing to change his character sounds kind of crazy.
But that’s exactly what Balor wants. Appearing on a WWE Network episode of Table for 3 with The Hardy Boyz, Balor talked about why he wants to be able to reinvent himself as his career progresses:
“Obviously, seeing [the Hardys] continue to evolve the last 25 years, that inspires me to keep evolving my character. And I’m quite happy with how I’m doing at the moment, but I’m always trying to push myself to create something new and I think my main goal going forward over the next five, 10 years would be maybe create another alter ego like you guys have.”
Being able to change up a character is a lot easier said than done. Obviously, both Hardy Brothers and other superstars like The Undertaker, Triple H and Chris Jericho have succeeded at it. On the other hand, other wrestlers like Dolph Ziggler have learned that it’s not so easy.
Right now, Balor’s Demon King persona is one of the most successful and popular in the wrestling world. But in today’s era, gimmicks can die and lose the interest of fans pretty quickly. That’s why it’s good for Balor to already notice that a character change in the future may be necessary.
And considering that Vince McMahon doesn’t think Balor is “over enough”, that could spell the end of the Demon King’s run in the future, and a new character for Balor may be in the cards.
That’s for another day, though. Balor is still working towards being a main event superstar, and as long as he can find ways to reinvent himself when necessary, he should flourish as one of the top superstars of the PG Era.
