WWE has a long history of trying to build up giants as top stars. Vince McMahon’s fascination with the bigger athletes started when Andre the Giant became a huge draw for WWE in the 80s. The attraction element of a talented big man can bring fans into the venue to attend shows and watch on television. Successful giants like Andre, Big Show, The Undertaker and Kane all helped WWE out in major ways with their legendary careers.

Unfortunately, there are significantly more stories of the big men failing with their pushes rather than finding the strongest level of success. The wrestlers range from performers WWE wanted to main event to those that just never could get momentum to stand out. Find out what went into each of them struggling to hit their potential as we look at ten giant wrestlers that failed in WWE.

10 The Great Khali

The size of The Great Khali made him a huge prospect for WWE when they added him to the roster. WWE wanted to build Khali as one of the top heels on the roster after signing the giant from India. Khali was introduced by destroying and defeating The Undertaker cleanly.

WWE even tried to make Khali the World Champion when fans still weren’t reaction much to him. Khali’s WWE run was viewed as a disaster. The lack of in-ring skills and promo ability each prevented him from breaking out. Khali was a huge disappointment that WWE likely regrets signing.

9 Nathan Jones

Australian standout prospect Nathan Jones joined WWE with the expectations of becoming a big star. Jones looked like one of the last wrestlers you’d want to meet in a dark alley with his large size and intimidating persona allowing him to stand out.

WWE pushed him on a few occasions joining Brock Lesnar’s Survivor Series team and forming a tag team with The Undertaker at different points. Jones did not get to break out since he couldn’t get over with the fans and just came across as yet another generic WWE big man.

8 Giant Silva

Many fans will not recognize the name of Giant Silva, but he received an opportunity in WWE during the Attitude Era. WWE signed him out of Brazil following the end of his basketball career. Giant Silva was spotlighted as a member of the Oddities in the comedic gimmick.

The faction featured a group of ragtag wrestlers attempting to find success together after being outcasted. Giant Silva did not do much in his WWE career as the Oddities ended following a short run. The end of his WWE run would see him move to NJPW and eventually into MMA.

7 Brodus Clay

WWE wanted to find success with Brodus Clay due to his size and intimidating look. However, they utilized his intense appeal as a misdirect. Months of vignettes would see fans shocked when the reveal of his return would see him playing a dancing character.

Clay was known as the Funkasaurus essentially playing a dancing dinosaur luckily without the costume. WWE still could not find success with Clay as his in-ring work was too one-dimensional to get higher up the card. Clay was released and struggled to get bookings in other promotions.

6 Matt Morgan

The potential of Matt Morgan made him the top prospect in WWE for a few years. Jim Cornette compared him to The Undertaker due to his size and athleticism. Morgan would get called up to the main roster on a couple occasions with minimal success.

WWE tried putting him with Carlito as a bodyguard, but an odd stuttering gimmick confused fans on the portrayal. Morgan also was on Brock Lesnar’s 2003 Survivor Series team but never could break out to accomplish more. WWE eventually released Morgan with most of his career coming in TNA.

5 Kurrgan

Kurrgan

Robert Maillet joined WWE under the name of Kurrgan. The company had high hopes for Kurrgan solely due to his massive size as one of the biggest giants in the sports. Kurrgan also had an intimidating look that added to the overall appeal that made WWE invest in him.

The roles in the Truth Commission and the Oddities factions each would see Kurrgan lose more and more momentum. WWE never could tap into his potential as Kurrgan could never find success in the wrestling industry.

4 Big Cass

One of the more recent instances of a wrestling giant flopping in WWE was Big Cass. The tag team of Enzo Amore and Cass had strong potential after finding popularity in NXT. Their main roster run ended short as a duo when Cass turned heel on Enzo to receive a big push.

Feuds with Big Show and Daniel Bryan in between his injuries were meant to make him a star. Cass failed to prove he was worthy of such a push and started to gain backstage heat. WWE released him in a shocking move due to a few mistakes showing his immaturity.

3 Gene Snitsky

WWE pushed Gene Snitsky in a strange storyline involving top stars Kane and Lita. The latter two were involved in a romantic storyline that featured Lita pregnant with their first child. Snitsky’s first major feud with Kane would see him unintentionally cause Lita to lose the child.

This cringeworthy angle would see Snitsky get the catch “it wasn’t my fault” as fans started to just view him as a joke. WWE eventually gave up on the push and moved him into the mid-card. Snitsky had a few more chances, but he could never break out with his WWE career ending in disappointment.

2 Mabel

Big Daddy V aka Viscera aka Mabel aka King Mabel

Mabel received a main event push to become the next top giant character in 1995 after winning the King of the Ring. The Summerslam 1995 main event against Diesel would see him lose in his only PPV title shot as he struggled immensely in the upper card role.

WWE pushed Mabel on different occasions throughout the years with another run as Big Daddy V. It just never worked out due to his limitations as a performer. Mabel had some solid moments in the tag team and lower card, but he never was able to shine in the top spot.

1 Giant Gonzalez

The athletic background of Giant Gonzalez made him a valued prospect for WWE when signing with the company. WWE’s biggest angle for Gonzalez would culminate at WrestleMania 9 against The Undertaker. They believed in Gonzalez enough end the match in DQ as the only non-decisive victory for Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak.

Gonzalez looked ridiculous with a bodysuit and silly character. The Undertaker feud was his only run with relevance as WWE cut bait with him shortly afterward. Gonzalez was not an impressive in-ring performer and lacked the character skills to get his giant character across at a top level.
