'Stone Cold' Steve Austin and Goldberg stood on opposite sides of the line during the Monday Night Wars between WWE and WCW in the '90s.

While Austin was enjoying his rise to main event status in WWE, Goldberg quickly rose through the ranks in WCW to become one of their top babyfaces. The former professional football player quickly got over with the fans as he embarked on an undefeated streak that was once billed at 173-0.

Despite Goldberg's success in WCW, many believed that he was nothing more than a "copycat" of the Texas Rattlesnake. After all, these were two rebellious and merciless superstars who displayed a handful of similarities with their wrestling personas.

Goldberg appeared on The Broken Skull Sessions (transcriptions via WrestlingInc.com), to talk about the comparisons with Austin. In fact, the former WCW legend admitted that he strongly didn't care for Austin during the Monday Night Wars.

"I wanted to kill you," Goldberg said. "You represented the enemy. I never could have made it where I was without you being Steve Austin. I was the copycat over at WCW."

"Did I feel like it? Only when people said something about it. I’d say there is a huge freaking difference between those two guys right there. You and I couldn’t be any more alike, but be more unlike each other."

At any rate, Goldberg and Austin both enjoyed remarkable and illustrious careers in the ring. Without the Texas Rattlesnake, WWE could have very well lost the Monday Night Wars to WCW. But at the same time, maybe Ted Turner's company would have fallen out of business quicker if they didn't have a superstar like Goldberg to build around.

Unfortunately for WWE fans, we never once got to see Goldberg and Austin square off in the middle of the ring. The latter retired in 2003 - the same year where Goldberg joined WWE on a one-year deal. However, Austin was the special guest referee for the Goldberg-Brock Lesnar showdown at WrestleMania XX.

Copycat Or Not, Goldberg Wrote His Own Story

It doesn't matter if Goldberg copied Austin. At the end of the day, the 2018 WWE Hall of Fame inductee pieced together a unique and legendary career that continues to go wrong. Goldberg and Austin had some similarities, but they had completely different styles in the ring, and they both belonged in classes of their own. No matter how you feel about the potential "copycatting," you can't take away what Goldberg accomplished in the squared circle.
