With 2018 only five days old, Impact Wrestling didn't waste time in making things exciting for their fans.
Taiji Ishimori is now the new X Division Champion after defeating Trevor Lee on Thursday night's episode of Impact Wrestling.
Lee's reign as champion almost lasted an entire 90 days, but it was unfortunately cut short to 82 days. This was his third time as the title holder and it's now over. I'm sure he'll get a chance to win it back in the future.
Ishimori won the match after executing a 450 splash on Lee.
You can check out the entire match in the video below.
The 34 year-old Ishimori has now won his first title with Impact since signing with them in July of 2017. He started his career with Toryumon in 2002 and also spent time with New Japan Wrestling, All Japan Pro Wrestling and Pro Wrestling Noah, who he still makes appearances for.
Ishimori was a part of the GFW Impact tapings, where he was a part of the 2017 Super X Cup, but he ended up losing in the finals to Dezmond Xavier on August 17th. In November he defeated Tyson Dux at Bound for Glory, which led to him getting a chance to win the X Division title.
Some good news for Impact Wrestling is the fact that they drew their biggest audience in four months, which is amazing, given of the fact of how much talent they've been losing to other companies lately.
The show drew a total of 309,000 people, compared to 285,000 the week before. The last time they drew so many viewers, was in August of 2017 when they had 320,000. It certainly helped that the show was loaded with some great matches, according to Wrestling Inc.
Not only did Ishimori win the X Division title, but The LAX won the Impact Tag Team Titles from oVe in the main event. Thursday's show was the 140th ranked show on cable television's top 150 list.
If LAX had lost, they would have been forced to leave Impact, so it's fair to say that they saved themselves by winning their match.
