10 First person to lose MITB title cash-in

The Money in the Bank concept was protected for many years with the first slate of winners using their title shots to become stars. CM Punk and Edge each became major stars thanks to the stipulation giving them their first major world title reigns.

John Cena was the first person to win the title shot and not use it to successfully cash in. The title shot of Cena would see him challenge Punk for the WWE Championship on Raw with a week’s notice. Big Show interfering ended the match with Cena failing to become champion with the cash in.

9 Won tag titles with four different partners

John Cena is not remembered for having any long-term tag team, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have success in the tag division. The various tag title reigns of Cena would see him win gold with four different wrestlers all with similar storylines.

Cena winning the tag gold with The Miz and Shawn Michaels each played into their WrestleMania feuds in different years of two enemies forced to team together. Batista had a similar role as a rival working on the same page as Cena. The fourth partner was David Otunga when Cena was forced to join Nexus.

8 Lost WWE Championship to rookie Sheamus

Sheamus winning the WWE Championship in his first year on the WWE roster was a huge opportunity for him. Very few wrestlers ever get such a chance to succeed, and Sheamus did it by ending a WWE Championship reign of John Cena of all people.

The stipulation of a Tables Match allowed Sheamus to shock the world by pushing Cena through a table to win the gold. Sheamus had a short run on ECW before moving to Raw and getting a monster push. The hope for Sheamus’ star power never worked out, but he had a tremendous career either way.

7 Freestyle rap battle with Brian Kendrick

The freestyle rapping gimmick of John Cena was quite entertaining and helped him become a rising star for the Smackdown brand. Fans loved hearing the humorous raps from Cena ripping apart his opponents and he even had a few memorable rap battles.

Kurt Angle and Big Show had the freestyle battles that fans most remember today. However, one of the first ones came against Brian Kendrick. The name is associated with rap greatness, but Brian wasn’t among the better rappers. This segment still provided great entertainment for Smackdown fans.

6 Three Stages of Hell match with Ryback

Ryback became the first big feud for John Cena after Cena defeated The Rock to become WWE Champion. The wrestlers appeared to lack chemistry as they rarely were on the same page. WWE still believed in the angle as it went on for many months.

The feud culminated in a Three Stages of Hell match at Payback 2013. Cena took part in the rarely used gimmick match beating Ryback 2-1 with the stipulations of a Lumberjack Match, Tables Match and Ambulance Match.

5 Main evented PPV against R-Truth

R-Truth is beloved for his entertaining work as a comedic character. However, fans may forget that there was a short time when R-Truth received a main event push as a heel. The comedic element of the “Little Jimmy” bit would still see him delivering laugh, but he still competed in the main event picture.

John Cena was the target of R-Truth leading to a WWE Championship match in the main event of Capitol Punishment 2011. The match was solid with Cena retaining as most would have expected. R-Truth still did a good job in the role to add some interest in the surprising main event choice.

4 Carlito/Jesus stabbing storyline

The personal feud between John Cena and Carlito grew more personal when Carlito’s bodyguard/enforcer Jesus got involved. This angle would get quite controversial with the story of Jesus stabbing Cena at a nightclub during their time off from Smackdown.

Cena missed some time before returning to squash Jesus and get revenge. Carlito ditched Jesus shortly after the match since Cena destroyed any chance he had of credibility. The storyline was a bit disappointing as fans had no idea what to make of such an odd idea.

3 Love angles with various women

The romantic storylines involving John Cena all were quite short, but there were a few of them. Cena had romance angles last a few hours to a few months with various talents. Maria Kanellis kissed Cena before the two teamed together to face Edge and Lita.

Cena and Mickie James had a few weeks of kisses before that angle was dropped completely. AJ Lee even had a short-term romance with Cena on-air until she turned on him to align with Dolph Ziggler. Even the real-life relationship between Cena and Nikki Bella was part of WWE television with his proposal at WrestleMania 33.

2 Losing to Kevin Federline

WWE came to an agreement with F-List celebrity Kevin Federline to appear on a few episodes of television. Federline became an enemy of Cena costing him a big match to King Booker. The feud culminated in a match between Federline and Cena.

Umaga starting a feud with Cena would see him destroy the champ leading to Federline getting to pin him in a match for a humiliating WWE moment. Cena would get revenge later in the show by hitting an Attitude Adjustment to put the ex-husband of Britney Spears in a world of pain.

1 Cryme Tyme faction

The short-lived faction of John Cena and Cryme Tyme would see the trio trying to create something special together. Shad and JTG were quite popular in the tag team division as faces which placed them with Cena given his star power.

The three made fun of heel wrestlers with their most memorable moment coming when they vandalized the limousine of JBL. Cena and Cryme Tyme had chemistry together, but they split up quickly due to WWE wanting to keep a superstar like Cena on his own.
