If you were unaware, John Cena is currently scheduled to make his WWE return on the July 4th episode of SmackDown Live. The last time we saw Cena in a WWE ring was at WrestleMania 33 which showcased John Cena and his fiancee Nikki Bella going up against The Miz and Maryse in a mixed tag team match. Since 'Mania, John Cena has been busy with his budding acting career filming for his upcoming movie "The Pact" which is set to be released in April 2018.

Quite recently, the WWE have moved forward with a new storyline regarding John Cena which now makes the "Cenation Leader" a free agent who is no longer tied to the SmackDown brand. This is most definitely a ratings-driven move, because when John Cena's around, viewership spikes.

Both RAW and SmackDown's viewership have been suffering significantly lately, so having their franchise star act as a "free agent" will allow Cena to help draw in fans to whichever show is struggling more. Though for the time being, John Cena remains a SmackDown Superstar.

Although it is unknown who Cena will be facing off against at Battleground, rumors are swirling around that John is penciled in to start a feud with current WWE Champion Jinder Mahal upon his impending return.

However, there is only a small chance that the two will face off against each other at Battleground - the match between Mahal and Cena is most likely taking place at SummerSlam. It is really anyone's guess at this point who Cena will be facing at Battleground, so we will just have to wait until July 4th for some answers.
