After an eight-year hiatus from the company that made him a household name in the wrestling world, John Morrison is returning to the WWE.

According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com, Morrison has signed a contract with WWE, though the details are unclear at this time. Morrison had previously spent time in Lucha Underground, Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide and Impact Wrestling.

In his original run with WWE - which spanned seven years from 2004 to 2011 - Morrison underwent numerous ring name and character changes. He started out as a mid-card performer named Johnny Blaze, eventually changing it to Johnny Nitro - a reference to the old WCW television show.

Nitro later formed the MNM stable with Melina and Joey Mercury - and they held the WWE Tag Team Championships together three times. After they split, he began working with The Miz - and his ring name was changed to John Morrison.

Those two later won the World Tag Team Championships together, but they disbanded shortly after, and Morrison began his run in the mid-card division as a singles competitor. He quickly became a fan favorite with his movie star/Hollywood gimmick.

Morrison would go on to win three Intercontinental Championships in WWE, and he also held the ECW World Heavyweight Championship on once occasion in 2007. Morrison left WWE in 2011 as he needed time to recover from his injuries. He would later hit the independent circuit before landing in the Lucha world and later Impact Wrestling.

WWE has brought back a handful of former talents over the last couple of years, including Mickie James, Drew McIntyre and Bobby Lashley. Now, Morrison is back in the fold, and we just have to wait patiently for his highly anticipated return.

What Morrison's Return Means For WWE

WWE is starting to put more emphasis on its mid-card division - especially under Paul Heyman's leadership on Raw. Morrison, with superb wrestling skills and a popular persona, will provide a big boost to WWE's tag team and/or mid-card division. He was always admired by the WWE Universe, and now he gets to add more to his wrestling legacy.
