So far, it’s been close to two months since Mae Young Classic winner Kairi Sane has competed in the ring. With all of the changes in NXT’s women’s division, with the members of Absolution and The Riott Squad getting called up to the main roster, one would think that Sane would be playing a bigger role in developmental. And while Sane’s extended absence has nothing to do with WWE giving up on her so quickly, it does appear that she might be taking some time off to recover from some wrestling-related wear and tear.
As noted by Wrestling Inc., Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter kept it short and sweet when a fan asked him why Sane has not competed in the ring since a Fatal 4-Way match for the NXT Women’s Championship at NXT TakeOver: WarGames, which took place on November 18. Without going into much detail, Meltzer tweeted the fan that “The Pirate Princess” is “banged up” at the moment, hence her ongoing layoff from the ring, which is now at close to two months and counting.
Although Kairi Sane hasn’t wrestled on TV for quite some time, she did make a televised appearance on the December 27 edition of NXT. Following Ember Moon’s successful defense of the NXT Women’s Championship against current Absolution member Sonya Deville, Sane appeared on the ramp and spied the reigning champ with a telescope, signaling that she has her eyes on the title. She was then ambushed by the very woman she defeated to win the Mae Young Classic, recent NXT signee and former UFC fighter Shayna Baszler.
Considering Meltzer’s brief comments on Twitter, this may be NXT’s way of writing Sane off until she can recover from whatever had left her “banged up.” According to Sportskeeda, Sane was not used in NXT’s recent TV tapings, which could point to a possible return sometime next month, maybe after NXT TakeOver Philadelphia, which takes place on January 27, one day before the Royal Rumble pay-per-view.
Knowing Meltzer, the veteran wrestling journalist is not the type to fudge things in the event a wrestler is suffering from an actual injury, so fans have little to worry about here. Expect Sane to kick off a feud with Baszler once she’s fully rested and ready to go, and expect her to challenge for the NXT Women’s Championship at some point in the near future.
