The 1998 WWE King of the Ring PPV had one of the most iconic moments in wrestling history, but that was just a small part of the actual event. Everyone remembers and talks about the match with Undertaker and Mankind in a Hell in a Cell, but that wasn't the main event and was sandwiched between two other big matches.

As the PPV title indicates, this was the finals of the 1998 King of the Ring tournament and also featured the semifinal matches, which had a surprise winner. There was also a WWE Championship match that ended the show between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kane. Here is a look at the entire WWE King of the Ring 1998 PPV, with the matches ranked from worst to best.

9 Too Much Vs. Al Snow & Head

The storyline leading into this match was that Al Snow was trying to get a job in WWE. He had arrived with a mannequin head that spoke to him, and he kept getting thrown out. When he crossed paths with Jerry "The King" Lawler, Snow got a chance to get a job in WWE.

He just had to beat Too Much (which would one day become Too Cool), and his tag team partner was Head. Too Much won when Brian Christopher pinned Head (attached to a bottle of Head & Shoulders to constitute the shoulders being down) and eight minutes was entirely too long for what was basically a handicap match.

8 The Headbangers & Taka Michinoku Vs. Kai En Tai

Headbangers and TAKA

The opening match of the 1998 King of the Ring PPV was a six-man tag. TAKA Michinoku teamed up with The Headbangers to battle Kai En Tai (Funaki, Men's Teioh, and Dick Togo).

As expected, this was a fast-paced match that only got about six minutes of action for the wrestlers. TAKA and Kai En Tai were the stars here, and TAKA picked up the win when he pinned Funaki with the Michinoku Driver.

7 Ken Shamrock Vs. Jeff Jarrett (KOTR Semi-Finals)

One of the semifinal King of the Ring tournament matches saw Ken Shamrock taking on Jeff Jarrett. Shamrock wasted no time in this match and attacked Jarrett from the start and just beat the crap out of Double-J.

Jarrett regained a little control when his manager at the time, Tennessee Lee (Col. Robert Parker), interfered, but it wasn't enough to slow down the World's Most Dangerous Man, who was building into a major star in 1998. Shamrock made Jarrett tap out to the ankle lock in five minutes.

6 The Rock Vs. Dan Severn (KOTR Semi-Finals)

The other semifinal match saw The Rock battle Dan Severn. It was interesting to see the two men who helped start the UFC both in the semifinals. However, only one of the wrestlers moved on as The Rock beat Severn here.

Severn spent much of the match toying with The Rock and making him look stupid, but The Godfather ran in to distract the referee, and D-Lo Brown hit the Lo-Down on Severn, which allowed The Rock to move on to the finale.

5 New Age Outlaws Vs. New Midnight Express (WWE Tag Championship)

The WWE World Tag Team Champions at this time were the New Age Outlaws, and they were members of Degeneration X. As a result, they came to the ring with Chyna in their corner. Their challengers at King of the Ring 1998 was The New Midnight Express, which was nothing in comparison to any other version of the team.

This was Bob Holly and Bart Gunn, the latter being Billy Gunn's first tag team partner in WWE. The Outlaws won a decent nine-minute tag team match.

4 Kane Vs. Steve Austin (WWE Championship)

The main event at the 1998 King of the Ring PPV was only the fourth-best match on the show. This is because there were just way too many shenanigans for a PPV headliner. It also left a bad taste because it was just a way to hot-shot the world title.

This was a First Blood Match for the WWE Title. If Kane lost, he had to set himself on fire. There was a lot of interference and the Hell in a Cell even lowered over them. Stone Cold kicked the crap out of Kane but was bleeding, so Kane won the world title — and lost it back one night later.

3 Ken Shamrock Vs. The Rock (KOTR Finals)

The 1998 King of the Ring finals had a surprising ending. The Rock, who was leading the Nation of Domination and was a top star in WWE, battled Ken Shamrock, the former UFC fighter with a strong MMA background.

The two men fought for 14 minutes, and Shamrock staved off interference and overcame The Rock's offense to make The Great One tap out. Shamrock beat The Rock clean to win the crown.

2 X-Pac Vs. Owen Hart

In the best in-ring wrestling match on the card, X-Pac battled Owen Hart. There is no reason to think that this would be anything less than an exciting and fast-paced match.

For as much crap as he gets, X-Pac was a guy who could go out and make anyone look great. Owen was one of the best wrestlers in WWE, and these two guys turned in a great eight-minute match that ended when X-Pac pinned Hart after Chyna interfered.

1 Undertaker Vs. Mankind (Hell In A Cell)

Mankind Battling Undertaker Atop The Cell

It wasn't the best pure wrestling match on the card, but it was the best professional wrestling match and featured one of the most significant moments in the history of WWE. Mankind and Undertaker battled in a Hell in a Cell match at King of the Ring 1998.

This is the match where Undertaker threw Mankind off the top of the cage and through the announcer's table. It is also where he chokeslammed him through the roof, legit knocking Mankind out, before eventually winning the match.
