Last year, Maria Kanellis was one of the few female wrestling figures who became a victim of nude photo leaks. Unfortunately, this has happened to a large population of celebrities over the past couple of years.
Kanellis—who announced her pregnancy in September with husband Mike Bennett—took to Facebook and released a statement about the recent leaking incidents. You can read the full statement here, but here is a brief summary:
“Playboy, Leaked Photos, and Being Sexy”
I have never thought about not being me. I have never been afraid to show off my body. I have never been scared of being sexy. And I don’t want my son or daughter to be afraid of their body. I want my children to be confident...
What will you tell your child about being in Playboy? I will tell them that mommy bought a house by capitalizing on a huge opportunity. I will tell them that mommy believes that the human body should be celebrated not shammed...
Leaked Photos…. So, I guess I probably should make a statement about this at some point. Haha… I guess first you should know, every photo that I have seen leaked was something for my husband of over three years, who I have been with for 6 and a half. They were sent to or taken by Mike...
Being sexy doesn’t end for pregnant people, married people, curvy people, skinny people, any people… Sex is beautiful. It creates life and draws huma Be the change you want to see in this world. Love Yourself. #PowerofLove
The Crazy Pregnant Lady
Kanellis appeared nude for Playboy Magazine in 2008 and appeared topless in a 2014 film, The Opposite Sex. But those were with her own will and power, so it's an absolute shame that her privacy was invaded during in the photo hacks.
Nonetheless, Kanellis shared a powerful and strong message, reminding everyone to love themselves, even through hardships. The soon-to-be mom is ready to explain the incident to her child, which takes a lot of courage. She deserves plenty of credit for handling this saga with class.
Kanellis' WWE career began in 2004, debuting as part of the Raw Diva's Search. Despite finishing fifth, Kanellis was soon signed to a WWE contract, and would stay there until departing in 2010.
The Slammy Award winner for 2009 Diva of the Year also had brief stints with Ring of Honor and New Japan Pro Wrestling, before moving over to Impact Wrestling. Her and Bennett stayed there until 2017, leaving the company and signing with WWE later in the year.
But Kanellis hasn't been on television since announcing her pregnancy, and Bennett last appeared on programming during the Nov. 25, 2017, episode of SmackDown Live. There has been speculation that both may leave the WWE once they have their child, but that remains to be seen.
