Dakota Kai might have impressed in her match against Shayna Baszler, but it wasn't enough to win her a spot at NXT TakeOver: WarGames.
NXT made history last week by announcing that for the first time ever, female Superstars would compete in a WarGames match. The issues between Rhea Ripley and Shayna Baszler have become so heated, and now include so many other Superstars, that William Regal decided he knew exactly how to settle their differences. Handy that NXT TakeOver: WarGames is coming up soon, huh?
The more attentive fans among you will have noticed a couple of anomalies when Regal made that groundbreaking announcement. That there were too many people in and around the ring for what WWE has dubbed a traditional WarGames match, and that the sides were not even. WWE later revealed that only six of the women involved had guaranteed spots.
It has been left to Baszler and Ripley to choose who they want to fill their final spots. This week on NXT, Dakota Kai went one-on-one with Baszler to try and prove herself worthy of a spot on the first-ever NXT UK Women's Champion's team. Kai gave a spirited effort, far better than the last time she faced Baszler, but ultimately came up short. She was then attacked by Baszler and her Horsewomen after the match.
Once that happened, it didn't take long for chaos to ensue. The other participants in the WarGames match came out from the back to help out Kai. There was one face not included in the match who shows up though, Mia Yim. Yim went to town on Team Baszler and during a backstage segment, after the dust had settled, Ripley revealed that she wanted to HBIC to be the fourth member of her team.
Ripley apologized to Kai, but the New Zealand native was clearly hurt. She stormed off, leaving Team Ripley to start planning for WarGames. That means there is only one spot left to fill on Baszler's team, and there's now a chance that spot could belong to Kai. Baszler will have been impressed by her performance this week, and Kai will now want to prove herself against the team that rejected her.
