The very first 30-woman Royal Rumble match will take place at this Sunday’s pay-per-view event. With only 18 of the 30 spots filled, it’s safe to assume that a number of past female superstars will round out some surprising entries.
But a number of big names have already ruled out possible appearances. This includes UFC star Ronda Rousey, who told TMZ Sports she’ll be in Columbia until mid-February as she finishes filming the film, Mile 22.
Molly Holly was another name that some thought could enter. But in an interview with Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc., she ruled herself out of appearing this Sunday. Holly said that she had friends who read rumours and began texting her. So she reached out to the WWE to find out:
“So then, I actually called, because I was like, ‘Am I gonna be?’ So then I called the WWE, and I was like, ‘Is this like a thing?’ And they were like, ‘Oh, fans are predicting who’s gonna be in the Rumble.’ I was like, ‘oh, I’m sorry. I’m like embarrassed.’ I’m just a mark who believes everything that’s on the Internet.
But, for a second, I was like ‘Ah crap! I don’t have enough time. I need months to prepare!’ But then it’s not even true, so it was nice enough that the fans cared enough to start a rumor. So, that’s cool.”
Molly Holly had a brief stint in WCW, before joining the WWF in 2000 under the Lady Ophelia ring name. She then became one of the top female superstars on the roster, winning two Women’s Championships plus a Hardcore Championship (you read that correctly).
She left the company in 2005, looking to spend more time with her family. She has made a handful of sporadic appearances since. Surprisingly, Molly Holly was not present at the Raw 25th Anniversary show this past Monday when WWE brought out a number of past female superstars.
Molly Holly most recently appeared at the 2016 and 2017 WWE Hall of Fame ceremonies. Though we’re sure to see her again in the near future, the Royal Rumble won’t be the next time and place.
