Heading into this week's episode of Monday Night Raw, there was wide speculation that Roman Reigns would return to The Shield, and that would set up a match against The New Day at Survivor Series.
Reigns finally returned to Raw after missing a month with the mumps virus, and The Shield challenged New Day to a match. The two-time WWE Tag Team Champions accepted the offer, setting up a dream six-man tag team match between two of the greatest factions in recent memory:
Suffering succotash! We, The New Day, accept the Shield’s challenge at Survivor Series but request that all shock-absorbing body armor including (but not limited to) protective vests, shoulder pads, and heavy wool sweaters be disallowed for competitive use.— ShinigamE (@WWEBigE) November 14, 2017
This will be the first match for The Shield's original three members together since Payback 2014. Of course, Reigns had to miss The Shield's reunion at TLC with the virus, causing Raw GM Kurt Angle to replace him.
At first, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose (Raw Tag Team Champions) were set to face The Usos (SmackDown Tag Team Champions) at Survivor Series. But they lost their title belts to Cesaro and Sheamus, after New Day came out and caused a distraction that cost Ambrose and Rollins.
It was originally reported that Roman Reigns was to join Team Raw in the 5-on-5 interbrand match, but they obviously couldn't go with that since he wasn't cleared until last week. It appears that the creative team had to wait until his clearance before they could finalize the Survivor Series card.
Now, we'll see two of the most dominant stables in the PG Era face off. All three members of The Shield have been main event stars, with each winning the WWE Championship at least once. They've also combined for five Slammy Awards, including Faction of the Year in 2013 and 2014. The New Day has won both the Raw and SmackDown Tag Team Championships two times each, and have been named Tag Team of the Year twice by Pro Wrestling Illustrated.
If this isn't a dream tag team match, what is? Get excited, WWE Fans.
