The main event of TakeOver: Philadelphia was so good it received a rare five-star rating from renowned journalist Dave Meltzer.
Dave Meltzer is one of the top journalists/reporters in the wrestling industry today and is respected by many in the industry. That means, when he gives a five-star rating, it generally means a lot, but when he does it for a WWE match, that’s incredible. The last two matches that Meltzer rated five stars in WWE came in 1997 (Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin, WrestleMania 13) and 2011 (CM Punk vs. John Cena), so that shows how rare they are, and that tells us just how special Andrade “Cien” Almas vs. Johnny Gargano at NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia was.
The match has been spoken about at length already, but it’s worth reiterating just how incredible it was. With its quick start, drama, and epic crescendo, this was truly worthy of a TakeOver main event. Both men, Gargano the challenger, and Almas the Champion are fantastic performers, and if booked correctly, could both be main event stars on Raw or SmackDown someday, and this was the perfect exhibition of their talents.
This marks the sixth five-star match in WWE history, the others being Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon (WrestleMania X Ladder match), Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (Steel Cage match), Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker (First ever Hell in a Cell match) and the two we mentioned earlier. So, this is a very exclusive list in the WWE and well worth being on this list. The two performers involved have the potential for many more in the future, with Tommaso Ciampa and Aleister Black on the horizon for both Challenger and Champion, we may very well see another one before 2018 is up.
So there you have it, Dave Meltzer has officially rated Johnny Gargano vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas at NXT TakeOver: Philadelphia five-stars. So what do you think? Was the match worthy? Is it the greatest match in NXT history? Is it being overhyped? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments below.
