The history of WWE has seen many different storylines change the course of history. Good storylines clearly have led to the greatest moments. Things like Steve Austin becoming the anti-authority figure against Vince McMahon, Bret Hart turning heel to re-form the Hart Foundation as a heel faction and Batista turning on Triple H to leave Evolution each showed how important a storyline could be to helping wrestlers thrive and how the product can entertain the viewer. Unfortunately, not every storyline will relate on that level and connect to become a success. In fact, most of the storylines created by WWE become forgotten due to various reasons, ranging from disappointment to pure failure.

20 Al Wilson marrying Dawn Marie

via whatculture.com

WWE experimented with a few bizarre storylines in the early 2000s. The Brand Split led to them throwing everything against the wall trying to figure out what the identities of each show should be. SmackDown was becoming known as the “serious” wrestling show, but Vince McMahon wanted a few wacky ones to keep the product well-rounded.

Torrie Wilson’s father, Al Wilson, would become part of the show. The feud between Torrie and Dawn Marie would have a strange storyline twist as Dawn convinced Al to marry her. Torrie saw Dawn become her step-mother as the feud became even more personal. It culminated in embarrassing fashion when Al “passed away” (in storyline) on the honeymoon.

via sportskeeda.com

WWE rarely uses the commentators in legitimate storylines when it comes to the in-ring aspect of the product. There have been a few occasions with Jim Ross typically being part of it. Ross having such a great fan following made it easier for fans to care about him.

An easily forgotten yet strange storyline featured JR and Jerry Lawler feuding with another commentary team. Sunday Night Heat’s Jonathan Coachman and Al Snow wanted the commentary spot on Raw and it resulted in a wrestling match. Coach and Snow won the match and the Raw jobs, but WWE quit on the idea quickly since the commentary was significantly worse.

via al.com

The use of Kane throughout the years have seen quite a few obscure storylines for him. The fact that Kane was such a unique character meant WWE would throw things against the wall to see what sticks. One that had a strange execution featured another version of Kane attacking him.

The real Kane was unmasked and another one wearing his old costume would attack him. It culminated in one PPV match with the real Kane won and there was no explanation for the purpose of the fake one nor the man who was portraying him. The fake Kane was portrayed by current WWE star Luke Gallows, but it led to nothing for him at the time.

16 Carlito's laziness becomes a storyline

via klaq.com

Carlito is still considered one of the biggest wastes of potential in WWE. His in-ring talent, charisma, and athleticism all helped him get a decent push early on. Carlito defeated John Cena to win the United States Championship on his first night in the company.

Things would trend downhill for Carlito after a few years. Backstage rumors indicated that WWE management felt he was unmotivated to improve in the ring and showed laziness. Ric Flair would call out Carlito in promos shortly after for being lazy and entitled. The storyline was meant to start something special for Carlito, but nothing would come of it in the long run.

15 Rikishi running over Stone Cold

via youtube.com

WWE had a chance to deliver an incredible storyline when they wrote Steve Austin off television in 1999 having him get run over with a car. The idea of a wrestler putting the top star in the industry out of action and having a year-long payoff before the reveal could have been the catalyst for a new mega-star.

Rikishi ended up as the person to run over Austin. It was a nice idea, in general, to give a hard-working and successful star the biggest chance of his career. However, fans associated Rikishi with the fun dancing and the heel turn was a very awkward one. This turned into a historic obscure storyline rather than an all-time great one.

14 CM Punk leading New Breed of ECW

via onlineworldofwrestling.com

The WWE project of bringing back ECW was a huge failure. There were a couple of interesting storylines that could have gone somewhere if booked better. CM Punk was clearly the biggest success story to come from the ECW brand as he moved up to huge success on Raw and SmackDown.

Both main ECW factions of The New Breed and the ECW Originals each wanted to add Punk to their groups. Punk joined The New Breed and appeared to become the leader. It could have been a great faction of Punk leading the young and hungry wrestlers. Punk, however, turned on them two weeks later and remained a face. The storyline ended with very few fans even remembering it today.

13 Dashing Cody Rhodes

via dailyddt.com

The WWE run of Cody Rhodes feels so far away considering how much he has done since leaving the company. Rhodes had a couple of different characters during his time in the WWE. A unique storyline featured him adopting the moniker of “Dashing” Cody Rhodes.

The Dashing character would see him become self-obsessed with his looks. Cody won a poll of the female wrestlers on the roster answering who the best-looking man in WWE was. This inspired the creative team to make Cody play the dashing villain. The storyline didn’t lead to huge success for him, but there were a few cool moments.

via picsunday.com

Big Show’s first WWE Championship reign is barely remembered since it was a disaster. The run only lasted for a couple of months, and Big Show only had one noteworthy storyline in the time frame. Big Boss Man received the opportunity to challenge Big Show as he was a respected veteran on the roster.

The storyline to set up their match was a huge disappointment. It featured Big Show’s father passing away as Big Boss Man used that to torment his family. via wwe.com

WWE may have lucked out when the plans for one of their storylines backfired. Bray Wyatt has referenced Sister Abigail in promos over the years. Fans hoped that a new character would be introduced as the inspiration behind Wyatt’s strange promos and intent.

Sister Abigail was revealed when Bray showed that it was his alter ego during a feud with Finn Balor. A match was planned for TLC 2017 between Wyatt as Sister Abigail and Balor as the Demon King. Wyatt likely would have been embarrassed by the bizarre storyline making him look bad before taking another loss. It’s not like Bray is better off today, but the alter-ego match may have hurt him even more.

10 Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio battle over Dominick

via thesportster.com

WWE has been known for having some tacky storylines that just make you roll your eyes. A strange storyline was created to add more interest to the incredible matches between Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero. The angle revealed that Eddie was the biological father of Rey’s son Dominick and now wanted custody to punish Mysterio.

Fans mostly viewed the storyline as being a hot mess, but the two wrestlers were such great performers. All their matches were tremendous, and they even closed the feud well with an outstanding ladder match and Rey winning custody. Regardless of the entertaining matches, the custody of a child being decided by a ladder match shows just how strange and obscure WWE can get with storylines.

9 Shelton Benjamin's mom helps him out

via forums.bodybuilding.com

Shelton Benjamin is one of the biggest instances of a wrestler just falling short of fulfilling his potential. His athleticism and amateur background made him one of the best in-ring performers in the world during his peak run. Benjamin had a couple of outstanding Intercontinental Championship reigns, but he could never move into the main event picture.

WWE tried to change things up for Shelton with a strange storyline. It featured an actress playing his mother and showing up to Raw every week to try to motivate him. Mama Benjamin took part in comedic backstage segments that actually started to take away from his moment. The obscure angle should only be remembered as one that essentially ended any chance of Benjamin moving up the card.

via youtube.com

WWE hired independent wrestler Joe E. Legend thanks to his relationship with fellow successful wrestlers Edge, Christian, and Rhyno. The hope was that he would also find success and become a good signing for the company. His character would get introduced in the oddest of ways.

Under the name of Just Joe, he would show up backstage and randomly tell wrestlers about others trash talking them. Saturn dumped his on-screen girlfriend in exchange for a relationship with Moppy. The comedic angle was meant to be a joke on Saturn, but fans started to enjoy the silliness of it. Moppy still didn’t last long as Raven placed it inside of a woodchipper. Saturn’s love for Moppy still remains an all-time obscure storyline.

via wwe.com

Vince McMahon being a part of any storyline has usually meant it should be an important part of the product. There was one specifically with huge ramifications of the reveal. It was teased that Vince had a long-lost son on the WWE roster that he was not aware of.

The reveal of Hornswoggle ended up making it a strange one that did not lead to much of an important aftermath. Hornswoggle was not the original plan. Mr. Kennedy was supposed to be revealed as the newest McMahon to lead to a huge push and WrestleMania match with Triple H. Kennedy was suspended due to violations of WWE's policies, leading to Hornswoggle getting the reveal for comedic purposes. A potential huge storyline turned into an obscure one.

5 Hulk Hogan as Mr. America

via youtube.com

Hulk Hogan is at worst one of the top three Superstars in WWE history. It seems ludicrous to have him wrestle under a mask at any point. However, WWE felt it was a good storyline idea to have Hogan become the masked personality known as Mr. America.

The storyline featured Vince McMahon firing Hogan and demanding he never show up in WWE again. Stephanie then signed the “unknown” character of Mr. America. The joke was that everyone knew it was Hogan, but Vince could not prove it. Mr. America eventually ended when WWE parted ways with Hogan for real and used untelevised video of his unmasking.

4 Diamond Dallas Page stalking The Undertaker

via wwe.com

Diamond Dallas Page is regarded as one of the greatest WCW Superstars of all-time. The reputation of Page would also have him as a top ten star from both companies during the Monday Night War. One would have assumed WWE would push DDP in a huge way when starting the WCW vs WWE invasion angle.

Page instead debuted in the strangest storyline possible. He was revealed as the person that was stalking The Undertaker and his wife, Sara, for many weeks. The storyline destroyed any momentum DDP had as a face from his popular WCW run. The Undertaker squashed him relatively quickly to end any chance of becoming a top heel as well.

3 Shawn Michaels becoming JBL's lackey

via wrestlingmedia.org

Shawn Michaels is arguably the most beloved superstar in WWE history and few people remember his angle with another legend. The storyline featured Michaels claiming he lost all his money and was going broke. JBL stepped in and decided to pay Michaels the money to help take care of his family by becoming his lackey.

Michaels did the dirty work for JBL and was humiliated on multiple occasions. The angle was not even that bad in execution as both men played their characters well. It was just strange and random to see Michaels in such a role. The obscure angle is one that most fans have no memory of today.

2 Fake Diesel and Fake Razor Ramon

via topsimages.com

WWE struggled in the '90s during the stages of the Monday Night War when the New World Order took over. Scott Hall and Kevin Nash joining WCW to unite with Hulk Hogan and start such a hot act led to fans putting on Nitro over Raw for the first time.

Vince McMahon struggled to come up with ideas for the first year of the nWo ratings domination. One horrible storyline featured him having Jim Ross declare he was bringing back Razor Ramon and Diesel. Fans expected Hall and Nash, but they instead received other wrestlers playing weak versions of the beloved characters. Kane played Fake Diesel and Rick Bognar played Fake Razor. It was a disaster that most WWE fans chose to forget.

1 The Anonymous Raw GM

Anonymous Raw General Manager

The Anonymous Raw General Manager is truly one of the most obscure and strangest ideas for a storyline by WWE. Most authority figures have been important people in the company from members of the McMahon family to legends to respected top stars.

The idea to have a laptop basically running the show felt ridiculous at the time and is even more strange looking back. Michael Cole read emails from the anonymous boss, often invoking his heel antics to hurt the faces. Fans waited a long time for the reveal, but it never happened. WWE revisited it much later with a comedic moment, claiming it was Hornswoggle all along.
