The highly controversial Alberto Del Rio (now Alberto El Patron) has recently been stripped of the World Association of Wrestling Championship—a Championship owned by Paige's family's promotion, WAW. It only makes sense for Del Rio to be stripped of the gold considering his recent Orlando airport controversy involving former WWE Divas Champion, Paige.
Paige's family (the owners of WAW) issued the following statement regarding the Championship's status:
"The WAW Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship has been declared vacant at last night’s Academy Show in Costessey, following a unanimous decision by the WAW Championship Committee. The WAWCC’s decision was announced by Zak Knight but no information was revealed regarding the crowning of a new champion."
Following the title being stripped off Del Rio, four of WAW's top competitors—European Heavyweight Champion Robin Lekime, British Heavyweight Champion Aaron Sharp, former World Heavyweight Champ Brad Slayer, and former European Heavyweight Champ King Kendo—have made it known that they all have their eyes set on the gold.
WAW announced a 32-man tournament will determine a new Undisputed World Champion over the course of the rest of 2017, and the final is scheduled to take place in Norwich sometime in December. The entrants into this Championship tournament are said to be deliberated by the WAW Championship Committee over the next couple of weeks before the brackets are announced.
This comes at a time when Del Rio has been all the talk among wrestling fans due to his seemingly never-ending news worthy controversies. Del Rio was just suspended by GFW, and it looks like his "love story" with Paige may be nearing its breaking point (if it hasn't already.) Now on top of things, Paige's family looks to be very unimpressed with Alberto's actions, and they have punished him the only way they really can—by stripping him of their promotions top Championship.
