The 2010s made memes a staple in online culture. They're a language of their own - while international barriers do exist, and not everyone can understand every meme, it's fascinating how a single image can cause someone to create a punchline, or see something funny become relatable and even funnier.

In professional wrestling, there are plenty of moments and snaps that can be made into memes. Maybe there's a humorous and endearing moment, or something uncomfortable happened and it's time for the internet to roll with it. Regardless, wrestling fans have made hot comedy buttons from simple moments. Here are ten popular wrestling memes and their origins.

10 Steve Austin Flipping Off HBK

This set of screenshots provides a simple meme with an easy message, emblemizing both disaster and disappointment. While this meme typically provides a negative output, its relatability helps garner laughter and comfort in the idea that you're not the only one dealing with these issues.

This set of images originates from Wrestlemania XIV, in which Shawn Michaels faced off against Stone Cold Steve Austin. The match began with Michaels cockily dancing around the ring and making faces at Austin. Austin responds with his iconic middle finger, and Michaels' look of offense solidifies the comedy.

9 Vince McMahon's Increasing Approval

Can you believe it? Vince McMahon approving of something. These images capture various shots of the McMahon patriarch, one beat after another, going from mild impressment to overexcited lunacy. This meme is one of many memes of increasing approval, where one idea is listed after another to be superior to the previous ones.

The reaction originates from the May 9, 2002 episode of SmackDown, where Stacy Keibler does some particularly saucy dances for Mr. McMahon. His expression increases drastically as she dances, even causing him to fly out of his seat in pure disbelief at one point.

8 Scott Steiner's Mathematical Catastrophe

via AJ Minotti

The idea of what makes a meme has become a fluid one. In the 2000s, memes were mostly references and one-off images, interchanged in speech, pictures, and remixes. With the advent of advice animals and relatable reaction memes, the meme "format" has changed. However, much like Scott Steiner did in TNA, his involvement gives the meme sphere an old school flair.

This absurd mathematical equation comes from the May 1, 2008 edition of Impact Wrestling. Scott Steiner cuts a promo against triple threat opponent Samoa Joe, specifically singling out him as the one who will lose the most from the match. Scott Steiner's status as a "genetic freak" ultimately gives him a "one-hundred forty-one and two-thirds chance of winning," while Samoa Joe only has an "eight and a third" chance. This moment was made ever so popular with this YouTube video, giving hilarious and accurate typography to the speech.

7 Unexpected Cena (Are You Sure About That?)

This meme is a reaction gif. It can be used to snarkily correct someone or remind others that their beliefs aren't all that founded. The image of Cena's head poking from a green screen and smugly saying, "are you sure about that?" has set the internet on fire.

The gif originates from a Cricket Wireless promotional video, where people answer questions about John Cena and make a fake introduction for a picture of him, followed by him bursting out of the wall with a mariachi band and making the fans go nuts. A truly wholesome and entertaining moment that solidifies the newfound respect the internet has for Cena.

6 Brock Lesnar Laughing, & The Undertaker Screaming

This meme is a personal favorite. The contrast with Lesnar's genuine chuckle and The Undertaker's horrifying expression makes for great memes. Heck, the moment itself is still gut splittingly hilarious. The meme can be used to play with hidden intentions or as an enraged reaction to a devilish deed.

The moment comes from Wrestlemania XXX, where Brock Lesnar ended The Undertaker's 21 win streak at Wrestlemania. In the segment, both Lesnar and The Undertaker are on the ground. Lesnar gets up and begins laughing in disbelief. The Undertaker follows, rising in his classic Deadman style, before screaming at Lesnar and going to blows.

5 RKO Outta Nowhere!

Randy Orton's lighting-fast finisher, the RKO, is a simple and effective move to make the crowd lose their minds. The RKO is similar to Stone Cold Steve Austin's stunner, except the attacker falls on their back, and the victim lands on their neck. The moves have caught on quickly for similar reasons - they're quick, exciting, and can be pulled, well, out of nowhere.

The phrase, spouted by WWE commentators, has frequently been a staple in the wrestling community. However, according to Know Your Meme, its popularity exploded when a soccer fan made an edit of an embarrassing trip. The user put together various images of Orton, eventually dragging down the soccer player.

4 It's Still Real To Me, Dammit!

Truth be told, the moment is awkward and uncomfortably funny, but that man has so much passion for the sport. His genuine love and concern for the wrestlers and their health is endearing. It's too bad it had to come out in such an unintentionally comedic manner.

David Wills' infamy began on eBaumsworld, later transitioning to this YouTube video. The breakdown occurred during a Q&A panel with wrestling greats, such as Terry Funk and Jim Cornette. It's not the most commonly cited meme, but it has been a consistent source for wrestling fans to aloofly present their own passion... or make fun of people who get a little too upset with the results.

3 Cena Wins LOL

via Cageside Seats

As much love as there's been for John Cena recently, it hasn't always been this way. From about 2006-2012, John Cena was winning match after match, appealing to the youth and taking away the spotlight from up-and-coming stars. Know Your Meme cites a 4Chan post from 2011 as the first iteration of the specific phrasing, but the anti-Cena attitude has manifested physically for years prior.

Perhaps the first time fans made their presence known with more than boos and signs was during ECW's One Night Stand pay-per-view in 2006. This sign carried the attitude of fans who were tired of seeing John "Super" Cena win, and continued their backlash for years to come. Thankfully, Cena's third arc saw him take more defeats from rising stars like Kevin Owens and Rusev.

2 A Little Bit Of The Bubbly!

Well, this meme was certainly a flash in the pan. It was around for a few months after Chris Jericho's initial utterance, and then just kind of went nowhere. What a strange meme. It seems to be a punchline and nothing else. However, just like everything Jericho says or does, it caught on quick and hot.

The phrase itself originates from a Bleacher Report video, in which Jericho goes off on a tangent about his win. He arrogantly congratulates himself and goes back to the green room to mock the food laid out in the back. At one point, he puts on a gruff voice while pointing out bottles of champagne and says, "ooh! A little bit of the bubbly!" From there, it just caught on.

1 Elmo Hitting The Rock Bottom

Even without any text attached, this picture is solid. The contradiction between a friendly childhood hero and the violence of professional wrestling makes for an immediately shocked chuckle upon first viewing - especially considering just how monstrous Elmo is in this picture. This meme can be used to present the idea of doing something in excess or unexpected misfortunes.

The screenshot originates from a match at Anime North 2012, of which this YouTube video grants an alternative perspective. You can see the Rock Bottom right after the stunner in the very beginning.
