Randy Orton has been a featured member of the main roster in WWE for longer than most of us can remember, and, as such, different generations have different opinions of The Viper — formerly known as The Legend Killer.

Today, we want to take a look at both the good and the bad in equal measure to try and judge what it is that makes Orton so divisive. He's been through a lot of different transformations, but along the way, he has been able to establish himself as one of the greatest, not only of his generation, but of all time (depending on who you talk to).

10 ANNOY - His Past

There are a lot of things that can Randy Orton can be pulled up on, from receiving a bad conduct discharge from the United States Marine Corps to some of the ways in which he behaved behind the scenes during his earlier days with WWE.

He was perceived to be incredibly arrogant and when you pair that together with some drug issues and backstage politics, it doesn’t make for the best of resumes. Thankfully, he didn’t allow those first few years to define him during his overall spell with the company.

9 LOVE - In-Ring Style

While some would label it as being a bit slow, we have a real soft spot for the style of Randy Orton. He may not be the quickest and he may not have that high flying edge that so many superstars do nowadays, but he quite literally does everything to perfection which always makes for a great watch.

The icing on the cake, of course, is the RKO. It’s known as being one of the most protected finishes in all of professional wrestling, and the reason for that is pretty simple: Orton is so good at hitting it.

8 ANNOY - Theme Song

When Randy Orton started strolling down the ramp with a brand new theme song in the form of Voices, it made a lot of sense given the crazed direction that his character was going in.

Now, though, all these years later, we find ourselves yearning for Burn In My Light. It was the theme that featured when he first made his presence known in the main event scene, and it’s what we honestly believe he should revert back to now. If nothing else, it’ll serve as a nice nostalgia trip for old school fans.

7 LOVE - Longevity

Randy Orton made his debut on the main roster way back in 2002, meaning that there’s a very good chance he could go on to enjoy two decades of wrestling in WWE by the time it’s all said and done.

The insane longevity you need to have in order to still be around in WWE for that amount of time is mind-boggling, and it certainly forces us to put some respect on the name of The Legend Killer. You can say what you want about the content of his work, but time is an important factor in determining excellence.

6 ANNOY - Promos

While we do honestly believe that Randy Orton has it in him to produce some world-class promos, we just aren’t so sure as to whether or not he’s being given the freedom to do so right now. Over the course of the last few years, his promos have felt very bland, without there being all too much passion featured in them.

There have obviously been a few exceptions, especially during his recent feud with Kofi Kingston, but for the most part it’s seemed as if Orton has been unable to get his creative juices flowing. We want to see that change before he hangs them up.

5 LOVE - 2013 Heel Turn

At SummerSlam 2013, Daniel Bryan was able to defeat John Cena to capture the WWE Championship. In the wake of that match, Randy Orton teased cashing in his Money in the Bank contract on Bryan, and then in the blink of an eye, Bryan was blindsided by Triple H who wound up aligning with Randy Orton for the first time in years.

It was one hell of a moment for fans of Randy who had been begging WWE to turn him heel for so long. What happened next, of course, was a shame.

4 ANNOY - Wasted Heel Potential

While some will choose to believe that Randy Orton’s run after turning heel back in 2013 was a good one, we respectfully disagree. Right up until the point he turned babyface again leading into WrestleMania 31, it just felt like he was nothing more than Triple H’s whipping boy/sidekick.

Given everything they’d been through together, that dynamic just didn’t make a whole lot of sense. He eventually became the rebel we all knew him to be during the feud with Seth Rollins, but in our opinion, it was too little too late.

3 LOVE - Twitter Honesty

Randy Orton just says what he wants on social media, and that’s especially true for Twitter. He takes shots at wrestlers, swears, and even tells fans amusing stories from the past. All of that, in our opinion, makes for a strong Twitter game.

It seems to be the only place where he isn’t restricted by WWE and what they want him to do and say. Sure, he gets close to the line, but never quite goes over it. Of course, there’s also a negative to all of this that we find a little bit more frustrating.

2 ANNOY - AEW Teases

Why would you tease the idea of jumping ship to All Elite Wrestling if you were always aware of the fact that you weren’t going to make the move? Some will argue that there was a chance Orton could’ve made the transition, but we’re just not so sure we believe that.

Sure, he was good friends with Cody Rhodes, but he’s just signed that blockbuster new deal with the company and you’d imagine he was in talks with them for a while before it actually came to fruition. Don’t toy with our emotions, Randy.

1 LOVE - Initial Babyface Turn

When Triple H gave the thumbs down signal and Randy Orton went crashing down to the canvas, it was clear to see that a babyface turn of some description was on the horizon for the king of the RKO.

Even with that being the case, the eventual turn, which featured Orton spitting in the face of Triple H, was massive. It launched him into a whole new sphere of superstardom and that’s exactly what he needed. HHH may have gotten the best of the rivalry, but at the very least, Orton had his big moment.
