ECW wrestling fans were famous (or infamous, depending on your stance) for being very quick to point out if a wrestler messed up in the ring. Of course, they would express that point with very “colorful” language, but they were knowledgeable enough to know if miss-steps were occurring in the ring. Usually a “botch” during a wrestling match in the ring can be placed into two distinct categories – a botch can be one that is uncomfortable to see because it could result in an injury to one of the wrestlers involved, and no one wants to see a performer be injured on the job. On the other hand, a botch also be unintentionally comical either due to a wrestler’s lack of ability to execute a move or because things look awkward enough that it looks hilarious. While one type of botch is of course more entertaining to than the other, both are facts of life within professional wrestling.

Some of these may be blink-and-you-miss-it type of botches, but others have been clear as day because they took place on television or a pay-per-view event. Whether they are cringe-worthy or made us laugh, wrestling botches are certainly something to watch for when enjoying a wrestling event.

15 Uncomfortable: Nakamura Drops Cena

via Fightful.com

Let’s begin with one of the scariest botches in recent memory, particularly because it could have had disastrous results for two of the more popular stars on the WWE roster. During their scheduled “first-time ever” match on SmackDown Live, Shinsuke Nakamura and John Cena put on a match that showed why they are two of the best in the business. Things seemed to be going exactly as planned until late in the match when he hit his signature inverted over-the-head powerslam, but did not execute it fully and ended up dropping Cena directly on the top of his head by not rotating him all the way over.

The referee was instantly beside Cena to make sure that he was okay (as the move was close to being disastrous), but Cena signaled he was okay to continue. Vince McMahon was reportedly furious backstage following the incident, but it's also visible from footage of the match that Cena lets Nakamura know not to worry about it – a very classy move by Cena during a very scary situation.

14 Funny: Man Slipping on SmackDown Live Intro

via giphy.com

I think it's time to transition from something devastating to something completely ridiculous – for as long as I can remember, WWE has always cut away to a shot of the arena where they are holding their live show during their broadcast to establish the city that they are in, and to show off any historic landmarks that may be in front of the building. While at a recent SmackDown Live broadcast in Green Bay, Wisconsin, WWE was showing off the outside of the Resch Center and the college football statue that stands in front of it, when a random wrestling fan walked in front of the camera and proceeded to slip to the floor due to the snowy Wisconsin weather.

Not even Todd Phillips on commentary could stifle his laughter and proceeded to laugh at the man on live television.

I hope that guy was DVRing SmackDown back home, because he is famous now!

13 Uncomfortable: Eddie Edwards Bat to the Eye

via WrestlingNewsSource

Not every incredibly scary botch comes from WWE, and particularly one of the more uneasy ones in recent memories took place on Impact Wrestling this past March. During a street fight against Sami Callihan and Eddie Edwards, Callihan attempted to crush a steel chair into Edwards with a baseball bat, but the steel chair was not placed appropriately and the bat swung and struck Edwards directly in the eye and nose instantly shattering his nose and orbital bone. It was a very scary situation, and Edwards was immediately rushed to the hospital to assess the damage and only recently returned to television. On the bright-side, Callihan has now become one of the most hated bad guys on the Impact Wrestling roster and is completely owning the mishap to the point of creating a t-shirt which includes baseball bats and eye balls. Truly the mark of a great heel, but a very scary moment nevertheless.

12 Funny: Torrie Wilson Can’t Get Up

via LatestSportsUpdates

Oh Torrie Wilson, we certainly did miss you during your 10 year absence from WWE... Torrie was employed by WWE following the WCW Invasion in 2001 all the way until 2008, but only competed in a handful of actual wrestling matches during her time and was mainly relegated to “Divas-type” matches like swimsuit contests and pillow fights. However, given the current focus on Women’s wrestling in WWE this would not have worked for her return and she was placed in the 2018 Women’s Royal Rumble as a participant and quickly showed her inexperience in the ring.

While wrestling with Sonya Deville, Torrie attempted to leap-frog over Deville in the corner but required a lot of assistance to fully execute the move and unfortunately the camera caught all of the struggle.

Sorry Torrie, but I think the wrestlers of today may be a bit more skilled than you are, but thank you for the surprise entry!

11 Uncomfortable: Cesaro Goes Head First

via WrestlingForum.com

Before the creation of The Bar, Cesaro and Sheamus were embroiled in a best-of-seven match feud together that took place over several months which culminated in their seventh match at Clash of Champions in 2016 which featured one of the many scary through-the-ropes dives that will be featured on this list. Cesaro was very lucky to escape this botch unscathed without a broken neck, and you can see that he is landed head first directly on the lightly-padded floor and the fall was not broken by Sheamus who was very quick to check on him.

While the two of them are teaming together now and have seen great success as a team, Sheamus was very close to not have a tag team partner and Cesaro was unfortunately very close to ending up like his previous partner Tyson Kidd with this potential injury.

10 Funny: Enzo Can’t Get Outside

via gfycat.com

There is one thing Enzo Amore was good for during his time with WWE, and it was for laughing at some of the mistakes he made while in the ring. With no prior wrestling experience before he joined NXT in 2012, some of the errors he made in the ring were fairly comical.

Even when he was in the ring with someone as skilled as Cesaro, he still managed to have a lot of miss-cues and miss-timed actions in the ring.

One of my favorite botches that happen are when they occur from the right in front of the entrance ramp because we get a great view of them, and this one of Enzo struggling to get pushed over the top rope ranks up there with the best of them. Since departing WWE in 2018, Enzo has not really been missed on WWE programming, but after seeing a funny botch like this, I think we found what we miss from him and it is spelt B-O-T-C-H.

9 Uncomfortable: Strowman and Lesnar Shoot

via Gyfcat.com

Watching gargantuan wrestlers in the ring is one of the big draws of professional wrestling as it can often look like two superhero-type characters battling it out due to their size and strength. However, when two of the biggest wrestlers on WWE’s roster today decided to be a little bit stiffer in the ring than usual, it certainly made for an uncomfortable experience. At the Royal Rumble, Strowman ended up hitting a very stiff knee-strike to the side of Lesnar’s head which ended up angering The Beast Incarnate, who responded by throwing UFC-style punches directly to Strowman’s head, and angrily shouting “Slow down, kid!” to Strowman in the ring.

Following this, the strikes were not as stiff but it was scary for a few moments as the two behemoth athletes stood toe-to-toe. Could anyone really stop them if they started to fight for real?

8 Funny: Table Doesn’t Cooperate with Omega

via CewshReviews.com

When tables to not cooperate during wrestling matches, it usually makes for a scary moment in the ring as fans are not sure how things will turn out. However, during WrestleKingdom 11 when a table did not exactly work for Kenny Omega.

In a high spot, the table broke in such a comical manner that no one was focusing on if Kenny was hurt or not, but they were just laughing at the table.

Omega is currently one of the best wrestlers in the entire world and knows how to handle himself when things do not go as planned and seemed to land in a safe way outside of the ring, which allows to focus on the hilarity of how he landed on the table. Planning out a complicated spot like this would require precise timing by anyone, so how in the world could any other wrestler expect to pull it off if Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada can’t?

7 Uncomfortable: Sasha Banks Falls

via WrestlingForum.com

If there is one thing that we have learned about Sasha Banks since she debuted on the main roster in 2015 is that she needs to slow down in the ring at times. Finding a video of Sasha Banks botching a dive through the ropes was unfortunately too easy as there have been numerous close calls while she has performed on RAW. This time, Sasha was wrestling The Empress of Tomorrow prior to WrestleMania season when they attempted to run a spot where Asuka would stop Banks with a kick to the head, but it did not matter – Sasha’s feet would get tangled in the middle rope, and she would come crashing to the floor head-first.

Any time that a dive through the ropes goes wrong it's a very scary moment, but since we have seen it happen to Sasha so many times (such as during her Hell in the Cell match with Charlotte) that each time a mistake like this is made it makes fans very worried that it could be one of her last.

6 Funny: Asuka’s Cape gets Stuck

Going from a match featuring Asuka where it involved a botch where things became uncomfortable, to watching The Empress of Tomorrow herself have something hilarious happen during her very dramatic entrance.

One of the biggest appeals about Asuka as a performer is that her entrance involves such mystique that she really comes off like a larger-than-life wrestler.

In order maintain that mystery, things need to go off without a hitch – unfortunately one fan in attendance was able to capture a moment where Asuka’s cape became stuck on the WWE set behind her, which required a stage-hand to reach out and attempt to detach it while Asuka awkwardly stalled on the stage until she became freed.

It kind of ruins the mysteriousness of Asuka when you see something so human-esque happen to her, but it certainly makes us laugh!

5 Uncomfortable: Sunil Singh over the Table

via giphy.com

The backstage world of professional wrestling is well known for being a difficult one to ingratiate yourself into, as wrestlers can sometimes be very rough with new people that enter their locker room. When Sunil and Samir Singh debuted alongside Jinder Mahal during his pursuit of the WWE Championship, they were quick to interfere at any opportunity to give Mahal the leg up during his matches. However, Sunil Singh interfered one too many times during matches involving Randy Orton, and he was going to be thrown into the announce table as a result.

It appears that Orton may have thrown Sunil a little too hard as he ended up bouncing off the table neck-first without going through it.

Thankfully, Sunil was okay following the incident, but Orton’s look of worry about how he landed says it all about how uncomfortable it was for all of us watching.

4 Funny: Kazarian Falls Over

via YouTube.com

Even some of the most veteran wrestlers can struggle in the ring when things go off script, and can struggle to gain their footing back. Kazarian has been wrestling for twenty years at this point, but even the best fall down sometimes. During a recent six- man tag match at Strong Style Evolved, a small miss-step in the ring while attempted to perform a signature spring-board leg drop led to Kazarian still attempting to hilariously hit the maneuver anyways without the added leverage of the ropes, but essentially just looked like he was just falling over while performing the move. If you look at Kazarian’s face after slipping, a veteran of his caliber instantly knows that he just did something silly in the ring, but I’m sure he is also hoping that no one else saw the error.

3 Uncomfortable: Kalisto vs. Water Bottle

via Tenor.com

Let me start off by saying this, wrestling fans – it is never okay to physically assault a professional wrestler while they are performing in the ring, no matter how much they antagonize you or you dislike them. They are performers, and deserve the respect of fans for putting their bodies in the line for their entertainment. It would be one thing if a fan got in the face of a wrestler they didn't like, but to maliciously throw a water bottle at a performer like this is absolutely unacceptable because there was only an intention to harm Kalisto while he was performing for the enjoyment of the fans.

Following the incident Kalisto received bruising on his face and lips, which prompted his wife to take to Twitter to address “the idiots who harmed my husband”. There is nothing about this incident that makes it alright, and this should serve as a lesson to fans who think that it is.

2 Funny: Strowman Puts Himself Through Table

via Gyfcat.com

The thing about a professional wrestling match is that it is designed to be a performance where everyone can see everything that is happening in the ring, and fans are able to see every single move that the wrestlers make, particularly when it is televised.

Unfortunately for Kane and Braun Strowman, cameras were able to capture a very funny miss-step during their match at the Royal Rumble.

While attempting to put Braun through a table during the match, there was a moment where Kane was caught missing his cue to put Braun through the table, but Braun took the liberty himself to essentially throw himself through the table. Perhaps Braun was hoping that no one would have caught this mistake, but perhaps he also forgot that he was live on the WWE Network across the entire world.

1 Uncomfortable: Nia Jax Misses A Shoulder Breaker

via Gyfcat.com

Wrestlers are trusting each other with their bodies in the ring, and the utmost care needs to be taken at all times in the ring to ensure the safety of their opponent. Not to make a direct accusation against Nia Jax, but it seems as though instead of taking the extra step to ensure that her opponent is landing in safe place on the mat, she seems to carelessly toss Charlotte following executing the shoulder-breaker maneuver, which resulted in her awkwardly landing on her head and neck.

If Nia had taken the extra care to ensure a safe landing for Charlotte, this would not even be considered an uncomfortable moment but instead we were given a very scary moment in Charlotte’s career. Hopefully this served as a learning experience for Nia to take care of her opponents in the future, and that she can look like a monster in the ring without being a dangerous worker.
