Some wrestling fans enjoy watching wrestling for the physical spectacle of strength that is on display in the ring, and would have likely enjoyed seeing Braun Strowman rip apart various pieces of the RAW set or push ambulances over in the parking lot. Others enjoy the technical aspect of a wrestling match and cannot wait to see wrestlers like William Regal, Cesaro and Daniel Bryan work their magic during a match to technical excellence. Other wrestling fans enjoy the high-flying nature of a Cruiserweight encounter, and are likely glued to the screen during an episode of 205 Live. The fact that a professional wrestling program offers each of these experiences means that WWE has the ability to send every fan in attendance home happy during a show.

Someone that has watched wrestling all their life, can fully recognize the hard work and professionalism that goes into a wrestling match and respect each wrestler in the ring for the work that they are doing. However, when we're able to spot any instance of when something is botched it brings so much joy. The work that WWE wrestlers do is incredible and should not be taken lightly, but I look at it like a film student watching a movie and looking for errors– it is just a different way to study professional wrestling. Sometimes botches are very apparent and can be seen by everyone (such as Titus O’Neil’s hilarious fall at The Greatest Royal Rumble), however sometimes it also takes a trained eye to spot some of the very subtle instances of something going wrong which can only be seen by the most attentive and hardcore of wrestling fans.

15 Twitter - Hulk Hogan and Bam Margera

via wrestlinginc.com

While he may not technically be with WWE at this point in time, most fans who have been watching professional wrestling know that Hulk Hogan is synonymous with WWE and was the face of the company for many years, and we could so far to say that he was a cultural icon in the 80s and 90s. Since then, he has experienced a spectacular fall from grace after a leaked tape revealed him spurting slurs caused WWE to distance themselves from him, and they have essentially erased any mention of him from WWE programming.

While we may not be watching him on our television screens anymore, we are still able to see him on social media where he has provided us with a huge personal botch via Twitter. It seems as though Hogan has mistaken exactly which member of the former Jackass crew tragically passed away in 2011 from a car accident. While fans of the former stunt show know that Ryan Dunn sadly passed away, Hogan mixed up Dunn and his co-star Bam Margera who he posted a condolences message for on Twitter, which everyone was quick to point out was incorrect. I personally cannot wait to see a response from Margera himself which will certainly be hilarious. You see ladies and gentlemen, not all botches take place in a wrestling ring as this instance certainly left Hogan with egg on his face, brother.

14 Backlash 2018 – AJ Styles with a Chair

via skysports.com

Since WWE’s transition to a PG-style of programming, we have not been treated to much blood or excessive violence during wrestling matches, and if a hardcore (or the dully-named Extreme Rules) match does take place you can expect that the weapons-style of fighting will be relatively tame versus what was seen in WWE years ago. That being said, a good rule of thumb is that if you are seeing blood in a WWE match these days, it is likely been as a result of a mistake in the ring and will be tended to by WWE’s ringside medical personnel. WWE is very careful with their performers these days and there are few instances of excessive violence these days.

It appears that AJ Styles did not get this memo during his recent match with Shinsuke Nakamura at Backlash this year, as he caused quite a stir to his own face.

During the match while Nakamura was looking to hit his Kinsasha maneuver, Styles threw a chair towards his leg to counter the move.

While the chair was obviously effective at stopping Nakamura in his tracks and from hitting the move, there was some unforeseen consequences to Styles’ counter as the chair rebounded off Nakamura’s leg and smacked into the side of Styles’ face causing a large gash in his cheek and a bloody nose during the match. Perhaps next time Styles will think of a better counter which does not result in a facial laceration, and hopefully it is not a low-blow either as there have been too many of those during this feud as well.

13 Primo’s Springboard

— callum hopkin (@uncle_callum) April 27, 2018

A non-hardcore fan would likely have not noticed this botch from the Greatest Royal Rumble because, let’s be honest, not everyone is paying attention to when Primo Colon is in the ring on WWE television these days. With both him and his cousin Epico Colon spending the majority of 2018 off of television due to a combination of injuries and an alleged distaste for their current status in WWE, they have not produced many “must-see” moments lately. When the Colons do make an appearance in WWE it has only been in supplementary roles, such as battle royals, Rumble Matches or as Lumberjacks, but they have certainly not been given center-stage to perform in quite some time (which may have contributed to their unhappiness with the company at this time).

Regardless of how they are feeling, perhaps it is moments like this that have made WWE Management more sour on this team than in the past – with almost every wrestler included in the Greatest Royal Rumble match in Saudi Arabia, some wrestlers took it as an opportunity to gather some camera-time and show-off for the crowd by dazzling them with their skill set. Unfortunately for Primo, those that were looking very closely at his minimal time in the match only saw him slip-up while attempting to perform a springboard maneuver, leaving him flat on his behind instead of looking like a star.

12 Graves has Bullet Club on the Brain

For those wrestling fans who branch out to promotions outside of WWE, the concept of The Bullet Club would be very familiar to you as they are currently the hottest thing going in professional wrestling right now. However, if you are only a loyal WWE fan, then you likely missed this moment as WWE Management has a tendency to bury things that have become popular outside the “WWE Universe”. With so many current wrestlers on the WWE roster being former members of The Bullet Club, this is getting more difficult, so WWE has arranged to reference them in more subtle ways, such as Gallows and Anderson being referred to as The Club and Finn Balor’s fan base named the Balor Club. Essentially any way that WWE can avoid saying The Bullet Club on air, they would consider it a success.

It seems commentator Corey Graves didn't get this memo, as his recent slip-of-the-tongue moment while commenting on Balor’s entrance during an episode of RAW made fans of the New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor group laugh very loudly. Instead of referring to The Balor Club, Graves mentioned The Bullet Club on his live microphone causing fellow commentator Michael Cole to try and cover for him by correcting him, and Graves comically stating that he has a “speech impediment” which caused the slip.

11 Not-so-Exciting Twisted Bliss

cia cagesideseats.com

The WWE has made a considerable effort to have Women’s Wrestling be seen as a viable viewing option for all wrestling fans, when it was previously seen as a non-entity in WWE by fans due to how it was presented. If you can think back to the mid-2000s where the women’s division was made up of un-trained female athletes who were seemingly only on screen as eye candy instead of professional wrestlers, it would have been unthinkable to hold spectacles such as the Women’s Royal Rumble or a Hell in the Cell match featuring only women. However, with the current depth of talent, WWE has been able to showcase their female athletes in a grand way, including the first ever Women's Elimination Chamber match.

One of the coolest moments of this match was watching Bliss hit her patented Twisted Bliss maneuver from the top of the chamber’s cages onto Sasha Banks, which looked like an incredibly high risk maneuver. Considering that she hit the move beautifully, why would this be considered a botch?

If the move was to be seen as devastating, then Sasha would likely be very hurt by the maneuver, but it seems that no-less than two seconds after being hit by Bliss, she was able to pop her into the Bank Statement submission hold.

For someone who understands wrestling psychology, this makes absolutely no sense and completely diminished the value of the maneuver in such an important moment.

10 AJ Styles - “Universal Champion”

via Botchamania

Not all botches take place in the ring – some of the more hilarious ones happen due to a production error, which are often only caught if you are watching the program closely enough. It is very easy to see if a wrestler slips while performing a move or if there is a miscommunication during a match, however if there is a small error during the technical television production of a WWE programming it is not always caught by everyone. Sometimes they are small enough that they can be fixed quickly, such as a wrestler’s entrance video not playing properly, but other times the Internet is quick enough to capture it quickly so we can laugh at it together.

Knowing how many eyes are looking at WWE’s show during WrestleMania, it's baffling that an error like this would pass by all the members of production, but we all got to see it. While coming down to the ring for his third WrestleMania appearance and first as reigning WWE Champion, AJ Styles made his long entrance down the ramp before facing Shinsuke Nakamura. While fans were eagerly anticipating this “dream match”, all that fans watching on the WWE Network could notice is that his entrance placard was introducing him as the Universal Champion, which is a title he has yet to win during his WWE career and is currently held by Brock Lesnar.

9 Lesnar and Reigns Cage Match Ending

via Tenor

While not as discreet a botch as some of the others on this list, the ending to the Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns Universal Championship match at The Greatest Royal Ruble needs to be discussed as there have been a lot of questions from fans watching the event and what actually occurred versus what was meant to happen. We know that when match endings are overly complicated and convoluted that there is more room for error, and this was certainly no different – the brutal cage match between the two men was designed for both Lesnar and Reigns to throw themselves through the cage wall, and land simultaneously on the floor and then for Lesnar to likely roll-off the fence first to be declared the victor, with Reigns left once again without the Championship he has been pursuing for months now.

Unfortunately, things did not go as planned and the match ending caused a fair amount of controversy – after the cage wall broke, Reigns’ feet very clearly hit the ringside floor first before Lesnar’s, which would mean he should be declared the new Universal Champion, however WWE officials maintained that Lesnar won despite the glaring evidence otherwise. Even the commentators had a difficult time justifying calling Lesnar the winner as it was clear that it was not the case.

8 “No Submissions”, Except for Gargano

via cagesideseats.com

For the past three years now, the clear match of the year candidate for WWE has come from the NXT brand - whether it was Sasha Banks versus Bayley, The Revival versus #DIY or Tyler Bate versus Pete Dunne, the NXT brand has pumped out some incredible matches to be very proud of. These matches all had a combination of drama, athleticism and story-telling which set them apart from other matches during the year and made them special. The current candidate from NXT for 2018 is certainly the unsanctioned match between Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa from NXT TakeOver: New Orleans, which had more than enough of the above components to fill up the entire evening. The match itself was a violent roller-coaster ride, which kept the audience on the edge of their seat right up until the final moments when Ciampa finally tapped out to the Gargano Escape.

Now, this may seem like a great match ending, but if you were one of the fans watching the pre-show for this event you may have been slightly confused. During the hype for this match, Senior Referee Drake Wuertz was interviewed by the pre-show panel to review what his role would be during a match of this nature.

Wuertz mentioned he was only there to count pinfalls, as this type of match featured no submissions – clearly this was incorrect as the match ended up with Ciampa tapping out and Wuertz himself calling for the bell.

Perhaps this was just a slip-of-the tongue on his part while being interviewed, but with the match finish likely being discussed with him beforehand this made for a fairly silly moment before one of the biggest matches of the night.

7 Nia Jax Forgets How to do a Backbreaker

From timing, to ring presence to remembering how to execute moves and movements there is a lot that goes into crafting a perfect wrestling match, there's a lot that wrestlers have to train for. Even the best wrestlers in history do not do these things perfectly during each of their matches – if you were to go back in time far enough, I’m certain you could easily find clips of Ric Flair, Harley Race and Bret Hart botching during their matches – but as long as some of the basic maneuvers in the ring are performed properly and basic wrestling psychology is followed, a match should be able to be executed. It's when one of these things start to fall that it becomes hilarious to watch.

Current RAW Women’s Champion Nia Jax experienced one such instance of having a basic move leading to a funny moment in her match where it appears that she forgot how to execute a basic backbreaker maneuver. While this move is designed to slam your opponent’s flat back over top of your knee, it seems that Nia either forgot completely how to do the move or was trying to invent one of her own (which is not nearly as effective). When comparing Jax to other females on the roster, she does have much less active wrestling experience in the ring, so this would almost be forgivable if this took place during an independent wrestling show, but for this to occur during a live broadcast of RAW with a wrestler who is slated to be the champion of the division is much more embarrassing.

6 Gronk Stopped by Security

via givemesport.com

Having celebrities appear at WrestleMania has been a tradition since the inaugural event. Sometimes these celebrities will be used during backstage segments, or in-ring duties such as timekeepers or commentators, with their main priority being to use their star power to make the show more enticing for people to watch. Depending on the celebrity, there may also be a level of physical activity involved during their appearance which often serves to have WWE cross-over into mainstream media following the event. For instance, WWE has had a history of involving NFL athletes in wrestling matches over the years, with football players involved in a battle royal at WrestleMania II, and Lawrence Taylor infamously defeating Bam Bam Bigelow during the main event of WrestleMania IX, which has seen varying degrees of critical success.

Do you know what the difference is between these instances and Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski’s appearance during the Andre the Giant Memorial battle Royal at WrestleMania 33? WWE Management told arena security about these other instances. It seems that someone missed their task to let security know prior to Gronk’s scheduled run-in to help Mojo Rawley win the match, so when the time came for him to enter the ring the yellow-shirted arena security stopped him as if he was an unruly fan. The security team was just doing their job during the event, but it made the entire situation look foolish since no one let them know about this planned interference.

5 Lesnar/Strowman Fight for Real

via gfycat.com

One of the draws of professional wrestling is that it allows fans to see larger-than-life athletes combat each other in a show filled with athleticism and showmanship, without the potential danger of real injury. While watching two gigantic athletes wrestle each other, there is a small comfort in knowing that they are not actually trying to harm each other, but are working together to put on a spectacle while in the ring together. A good professional wrestler is one who can blur the line between fiction and reality while also maintaining a semblance of realism during all the action in the ring.

Sometimes, this in-ring action goes a little too far and can lead to fighting that is more real than entertainment.

During the Royal Rumble this past year, the Triple Threat match for the Universal Championship between the Champion Brock Lesnar, Kane and Braun Strowman took a turn towards uncomfortable due to some ill-timed strikes between the opponents. At a combined weight of over 600 pounds, Lesnar and Strowman are physical specimens, so when they started to throw real strikes and punches in the ring, it became scary. As you can see, Strowman threw a knee towards Lesnar which caught him for real in the head, resulting in the former UFC Heavyweight Champion to retaliate with some real blows to Strowman’s head while yelling “Slow down, kid!”. Thankfully it didn't escalate more than this, as it would have been difficult to contain the two mammoths if they decided to fight further.

4 Charlotte Misses Big Boot

DOS BOTCH pic.twitter.com/z8VP2ZU83k

— callum hopkin (@uncle_callum) May 7, 2018

If a botch happens in the middle of a match, it must be very difficult for the performers to overcome. Things not going as initially planned is surely a recipe for disaster mid-match as it would likely throw both performers off of their rhythm, and the crowd would be fully disengaged from the action after witnessing something go wrong. Regaining the momentum lost after a botched spot can be very difficult once the crowd has been removed from the action. Now, what happens if the botch takes place only seconds after the opening bell? Would it be even more difficult for someone to regain their bearings?

Ask Charlotte Flair, who recently had to deal with blowing a spot only seconds into her SmackDown Women’s Championship match with Carmella at Backlash. Carmella, playing her dastardly heel persona to perfection, began the match with mocking Charlotte’s famous father, ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair’s in-ring mannerisms by showing off a strut around the ring. Charlotte has likely seen people impersonate her father for her entire life, and since Carmella’s impression was not the greatest she decided to respond with a running big boot to her opponent’s head. Well, it was supposed to hit Carmella’s head at least. Instead, the camera was able to catch Charlotte missing Carmella’s head by close to a foot, making it very obvious that she had miss-timed the maneuver. Showing this much “light” when performing a strike is a rookie move at best, and having it take place at the beginning of the match must have been difficult to recover from.

3 Mahal’s Whisper in the Wind

On the same page as Charlotte’s ill-timed big boot we discussed above, it seems that she was not the only one to miss her maneuver lately. In Charlotte’s case, Carmella still sold as if she had been hit by the maneuver, which given the fact that the in-arena audience likely did not notice the error was a good idea. However, imagine if the boot had missed Carmella by a mile and a half – do you still think she should have sold as if it hit her? Likely not, as it would have looked very funny to both the live and television audiences. A good professional wrestler is able to distinguish in the moment if it makes sense to still bump and sell for an ill-timed maneuver as it is important to maintain the credibility of the match. If wrestlers were to bump and sell for absolutely every maneuver than it would expose the business to the audience and fully take them out of the moment.

It seems as though Jinder Mahal may have forgotten this very important point at The Greatest Royal Rumble because despite having Jeff Hardy miss his Whisper in the Wind maneuver by a very clear margin, Mahal decided that it was in his best interest to sell it anyways as if it hit him like a gunshot wound. Even the fans in Saudi Arabia who has not been exposed to professional wrestling in the same manner as other countries were able to clearly see that it didn’t make sense, and the vibe in the arena certainly reflected that. Watching it over on video it is clear to see that Hardy botched the landing of the maneuver, and Mahal’s delayed sell shows that he was able to recognize it as well but still chose to sell it anyways, which ultimately makes both of them look foolish.

2 AJ Styles, Wrong Title Again

via IWNerd

Poor AJ Styles – he went through so much of this production mismanagement during his many years with Impact Wrestling, I’m sure he didn’t think he would need to deal with it once he finally signed with WWE in 2016. It is well-known that either Vince McMahon or Triple H are present at each broadcast of RAW and Smackdown Live and are usually in direct contact with the live commentators to help steer the direction of their commentary in an effort to guide the story to the at-home audience. Perhaps one of them should be stationed in the production truck instead, as there is clearly some errors that need to be worked out during live broadcasts.

As Styles made his way to the commentary table during a recent episode of SmackDown, he was given an introduction while at the desk which included a placard of his name and current Championship status.

Instead of listing that Styles was the reigning United States Champion, the production team mistakenly showed him as WWE Champion.

At this point in time, Styles would obviously have better appreciated a run with the WWE Championship, however he was tasked with bearing the flag for the United States Championship division. Due to his success previously, Styles has proven that he is a very capable and fighting Champion, and likely did not appreciate being reminded that he did not have that title with him presently. Perhaps one day they will get it right!

1 Asuka Entrance Cape Gets Stuck

The Empress of Tomorrow has been one of the brightest stars on WWE’s women’s roster for the past three years – whether fans were enjoying her undefeated streak while with NXT, or her movement to becoming the first Women’s Royal Rumble winner and now her current pursuit for the RAW Women’s Championship, she has adapted her hard-hitting Japanese style of wrestling to the WWE audience very quickly. There is something special about Asuka that makes her a spectacle to watch from the moment she enters the arena due to the aura of importance that she has about her. One of the most spectacular things about Asuka is her entrance – she has a mystical quality associated with he that sets her apart from any other woman on the roster and it makes her very enjoyable to watch beginning with how she enters the stage.

Do you want to know a really quick way to shatter that mystical quality? Have her incredibly long cape get stuck on the RAW set piece so that she cannot make it past the curtain. As captured by a fan here on YouTube, you can see that Asuka’s ring gear and cape became caught on the set piece, causing her to delay walking down to the ring and continue her stage walk and dance longer than she normally does before a production crew member was able to help detach her. While not visible on television, this very funny entrance botch was visible by all the fans in attendance to one side of the arena who surely had a big laugh.
