Renee Young is an important part of the machine that is WWE. As an announcer, broadcaster, interviewer and/or panelist, she's often called upon to sell the stories of the WWE to the WWE Universe and ensure the message the company is trying to send is heard loud and clear. In a way, Renee is her own character, yet during an interview with Edge and Christian on E&C's Pod of Awesomeness, Young admitted that she was a bit surprised to be a character when first hired.

Part of any good character is a name, but when Renee first found out that WWE had intended to change her name, she was a bit taken aback. Born Renee Jane Paquette, she had gone by that name on shows prior to her WWE arrival and was booking jobs with other companies under that name. She was the host of Aftermath on The Score in Canada and while she wasn't new to the idea of the wrestling industry, assumed — even after a strange audition where she was asked to sell a battery — that she'd be allowed to keep the name she had gone by on television for some time.

She got the gig, was preparing her new life as a WWE personality but was still surprised when she received an email from WWE that read, "Renee Stirling."

She told Edge and Christian:

"After I got the job and was going back and forth to Stamford, Connecticut and figuring out my visa, I got an email with my new name change, which was Renee Stirling and I was so stressed out about this. I didn't know that my name was going to change and that kind of threw me for a loop because, as you said, I was working in Canada before and had been on tv before so I felt very odd about changing my name."

The good news was, WWE was open to the idea of not going with Sterling. She was allowed to give a few other options and both sides settled on "Renee Young."

Since that day, fans have fallen in love with her as a WWE personality. She's one of the most respected people in the business and as Edge said, it's because she's pretty, down to earth and easy going girl you can talk wrestling with and have a beer. It would be interesting to know if fans would feel the same way if her last name was Stirling and not Young.
