Rey Mysterio made one of the more shocking returns to WWE at this year’s Royal Rumble. At the coveted No. 27 spot, when Mysterio’s music hit, the fans went crazy and he wasted no time in making an impact, eliminating Adam Cole and lasting to the final six.

Since his return, the WWE Universe has been excited to see more frequent appearances by the originator of the “619”. He’s ready to make a WWE comeback, he’s in arguably the best shape of his life, and the fans are clearly behind him being a regular part of Raw, SmackDown Live or even 205 Live if that’s where the company chooses to use him. There’s only one problem, WWE hasn’t signed Mysterio beyond his single Royal Rumble appearance.

The above video was posted by the WWE to their YouTube account. It’s been less than a week since the video went live and it already has close to 12 million views. No Royal Rumble video has come close and the WWE is clearly trying to get a feel for how the WWE Universe is reacting by posting more Mysterio videos. The greatest Mysterio moments video posted by the company one day ago also has over 1 million views. The appetite for his return is there and WWE is clearly hinting that they’re seriously looking at it.

The speculation is, however, the company and the wrestler are not terribly close to working out the terms of a return. Mysterio is more interested in working a part-time schedule and having time for his family. WWE wants Mysterio back on a full-time basis. If the two sides can’t figure out a way to meet in the middle, then Royal Rumble may be all fans get.

All that being considered, think about the potential a Rey Mysterio return could have for WWE.

First, the company needs another huge star who can wrestle. Mysterio has a built-in reputation as one of the company’s most popular Superstars ever, he’s got a huge Latino following and he’s an incredible in-ring talent. Guys like this don’t grow on trees for the WWE, and other attempts to recreate the magic Mysterio once had with wrestlers like Alberto Del Rio, Sin Cara, and Kalisto have essentially failed.

Second, the potential dream matches that await a Mysterio working in WWE on a regular basis are staggering. The idea that the WWE Universe could see an AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Shinsuke Nakamura, Finn Balor, or even Braun Strowman match versus a Mysterio that looks to be in incredible shape would get most fans salivating. WWE could go a full year before ever running out of quality opponents and matches for Mysterio.

Finally, Rey Mysterio deserves this. He didn’t exactly leave on wonderful terms when he finished his WWE run the first time, and if this is Mysterio’s swan song, both sides need to come together to make this memorable. Mysterio is a sure-thing for the Hall of Fame, and he could punch his ticket sooner than later by finishing strong with some of the above-mentioned matches.

WWE needs to get on this right away. The buzz that was created by his return won’t last forever and there is a small window in which to capitalize on this. He’d be a fantastic get for a match at WrestleMania 34 (perhaps winning a Money in Bank match) and he’d help bring fans back to live events when the company is searching for ways to draw a bigger audience.

Make this happens WWE. Mysterio wants it, you want it, and we know by the reaction at the Royal Rumble and from the millions of views on YouTube, the fans want it too.
