Ever since CM Punk joined WWE Backstage on Fox Sports 1, fans have been holding out hope that we'll see the former World Champion make an illustrious return to the ring.

January will mark six years since CM Punk walked out of the WWE - having told Triple H and Vince McMahon that he was heading home. He was officially "fired" by the company several months later - and his wife, AJ, Lee left WWE one year later.

But with Punk now working as a WWE analyst, it's natural to believe that he is getting closer to making amends with company officials. And for what it's worth, Stephanie McMahon expressed interest in bringing back both Punk and Lee.

You can now add WWE legend Rey Mysterio to the list of those who hope to see CM Punk back in the ring. The future Hall of Famer shared his hopes during an interview with Sportskeeda.com.

"I think definitely we would all love to see CM Punk back eventually," Mysterio said. "Whether he comes back or not is up to him - but I enjoy having him around, even if it's just with his FOX role. But we all enjoy seeing CM Punk in the ring. I doubt anybody out there would say, 'Nah, I don't really want to see him back.' He has a great personality, great character and he's great in the ring."

Rey Mysterio and CM Punk engaged in a memorable feud back in 2010, with the latter trying to recruit the Lucha Libre legend to join the Straight Edge Society. Mysterio, however, defeated Punk at WrestleMania XXVI Though he lost a rematch at Extreme Rules, Mysterio took down Punk once again at Over the Limit to end their feud.

But if CM Punk were to return, it's unlikely that he would see him and Rey Mysterio rekindle their rivalry. The former has engaged in plenty of trash talk with Seth Rollins, so The Architect is the best possible opponent for CM Punk right now - should he return to the ring.

CM Punk's Return Feels Inevitable

There is obviously plenty of work to be done, but right now, you can't help but think that we'll eventually see CM Punk back in WWE. You have Stephanie McMahon and Rey Mysterio expressing interest, and simply having him join WWE Backstage is a nice starting point in burying the hatchet with the company. We'll just have to wait and see how things play out, however, although things seem to be moving in the right direction.
