Ricochet and Velveteen Dream went head to head in Chicago on Saturday night, and was it ever in any doubt that the match would be incredible?

When it comes to NXT TakeOver events it is pretty much a given that every match on the card is going to be unmissable. The Undisputed ERA and Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch proved that in their opener on Saturday night. They were quickly followed by perhaps the most anticipated match on the NXT TakeOver: Chicago card, Velveteen Dream versus Ricochet.

Dream has built this rivalry on the basis that he thinks anything Ricochet can do, he can do better. That premise was not forgotten when the bell rang on Saturday night. Once Velveteen Dream had finished emulating Hulk Hogan during his entrance, the match began and things escalated quickly. Dream performed an acrobatic flip over the ropes early on, akin to what Ricochet does on a regular basis.

It quickly became clear that merely mimicking Ricochet wasn't going to be enough to keep him down. Plus both men could do all the high flying moves they wanted on the outside of the ring, but the match had to be won between the ropes. That's why Dream performed a devastating Death Valley Bomb on his opponent, but it appeared to take just as much out of him as it did Ricochet.

It wasn't just Dream pulling out all the stops of course, and Ricochet also contributed some high-risk moves to the matchup. It was his first ever one on one bout at a TakeOver after all. With Dream lying prone on the mat, the high flier ascended to the top rope, struck his opponent's signature pose, and executed Velveteen Dream's Purple Rain Maker. It may not be the move that earned him the win, but you can rest assured it would have hurt Dream in more ways than one.

Ricochet might have had the wind knocked out of him by Dream's knees, but eventually, it was The One and Only that managed to pick up the victory. It felt as if neither man would stay down for a three count, however, an insane 630 from the top rope proved enough to earn Ricochet the win. Dream understandably looked dejected once he realized what had happened, but he had nothing to be ashamed of in this one.
