AJ Styles has taken the wrestling world by storm since joining the WWE in 2016. Now in his third year with the company, the Phenomenal One is enduring his second reign as the WWE Champion.
Styles is arguably this company's top wrestler. He's put on clinical matches against elite talents in Shane McMahon, John Cena, Brock Lesnar, Finn Balor and others. He's been doing so well in the company that past superstars have hinted at wanting to face Styles in the future. This includes current SmackDown GM and WWE legend, Daniel Bryan.
You can now add former WWE star, Rob Van Dam, to the list of past WWE performers who has hinted at wanting a match against Styles:
@TherealRVD do you think you could beat AJ STYLES for wwe universal belt?— mark arthur walsh (@markawalsh90) November 23, 2017
RVD was one of the most electrifying and high-flying superstars of the Ruthless Aggression Era. Van Dam's hardcore style of wrestling and willingness to put his body on the line in many matches got him over with the crowd easily.
Van Dam has had two tenures with the WWE, but hasn't appeared on their programming since late 2014. The one-of-a-kind wrestler would undoubtedly put on an excellent match against Styles, but there haven't been any hints nor reports that he's ready to come back to WWE in the near future.
Currently, Rob Van Dam is working in the independent circuit. He's fought for the promotions House of Hardcore and Insane Championship Wrestling, where he faced past WWE talents like Scott Steiner and John Morrison.
During his time in the WWE, Van Dam won three Tag Team titles, one European Championship, six Intercontinental Championships, one WWE Championship and four Hardcore Championships.
Vince McMahon has shown his willingness to bring past WWE stars back, if the opportunity presents itself. We've seen Brock Lesnar, Chris Jericho, Goldberg and Kurt Angle return to the ring in recent years. Why not Rob Van Dam? We can only hope, especially if it means he just may get a match with Styles.
