10 Planned to wrestle Triple H at WrestleMania 32

Rock was forced to give up the idea of working a long match and taking bumps due to his acting schedule and past issues of getting hurt when working with John Cena. Triple H confirmed the match had to be canceled as he moved into a world title program with Roman Reigns instead.

9 Almost quit WWE due to lack of money

Life was tough for The Rock in the early stages of his wrestling career. WWE’s developmental contract barely paid any money and his first few months of the main roster were slow as well. Rock often saw his peers covering his meals when he admitted he couldn’t afford to eat out after shows.

Former WWE backstage personnel J.J. Dillon even admitted Rock stated he wanted to quit in developmental when having $2 in his wallet. Dillon talked him out of it knowing he had a bright future with the likelihood of making millions of dollars in the wrestling industry.

8 Extensively researched on the road

The Nation of Domination pose

Mark Henry was one of the first close friends of The Rock. Both guys worked in developmental together and eventually became partners in the Nation of Domination faction. Henry speaks glowingly about Rock as the humblest wrestler he ever worked with.

Rock apparently used to carry a VCR on the road along with a large collection of video tapes. The researching process in between shows saw him studying his opponents to figure out the best way to tell a story together. Rock wanted to improve and worked as hard as anyone to make his name in WWE.

7 Preferred to lose matches cleanly

Top wrestlers like Hulk Hogan, John Cena and Steve Austin were often protected in their rare losses by having outside interference or non-pin fall defeats. The Rock was jus as big of a star as those guys and refused to follow that same game plans.

Brock Lesnar was the biggest instance of Rock making sure Lesnar looked as strong as possible when defeating him to win the WWE Championship. Other wrestlers to defeat Rock cleanly included Goldberg, Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle to get to the next level in WWE.

6 Accidentally broke his first Rolex during promo

The Rock admitted one of his most embarrassing WWE moments almost made him cry in the ring. Success for Rock building would see him purchasing a Rolex watch as one of his first major items to make him realize he made it.

Rock wore the watch to the ring for a promo since he didn’t have an actual match. However, the watch still broke when he accidentally dropped inside of the ring during a melee with his rivals. Rock revealed he almost cried out of frustration for breaking something valuable to him, but he eventually realized it was just a material item.

5 Used to have bets with Steve Austin about how he would sell the stunner

WWE fans still find entertainment watching old clips of The Rock selling Steve Austin’s Stone Cold Stunner finishing move. Rock flopped around the ring in pain unlike the others to take the move. Austin loved it since the theatrics added to the move.

The Rock revealed that he and Austin used to make bets on purchasing beer for the other based on his selling. If one week’s sell was more over the top than the prior, Austin would owe beer to Rock and vice versa if it went the opposite direction.

Fans still loved chanting “CM Punk” and Rock reacted with the fun moment of calling Punk’s phone to leave a voicemail from the audience. Vince was livid about Rock encouraging fans to chant for Punk since it was something WWE wanted to ignore at all costs.

3 Wasn't sure about joining Nation of Domination

Jim Ross shared a story on his podcast about The Rock contemplating his future in WWE. Rock struggled at the start as a face character. WWE came up with the idea of turning him heel with the Nation of Domination faction since fans already booed him.

Rock was unsure about the move since the group had a racial confrontational element that he wasn’t sure about committing to in his career. However, Ross talked him into realizing how he could cut his own promos in his own voice as a heel and the rest is history as his career skyrocketed.

2 Requested other wrestlers appear when he hosted SNL

One of the first opportunities to showcase The Rock’s trajectory into Hollywood came when he hosted Saturday Night Live in early 2000. Rock received rave reviews for his skits that showed off the charisma and acting skills that opened future roles.

Dave Meltzer reported Rock pitched the idea to SNL to have some of his co-workers appear to hype their upcoming WrestleMania match. Triple H, Mick Foley and Big Show were part of the opening segment in humorous fashion. Vince McMahon’s relationship with NBC likely played a role in it coming true as well.

1 Refused to wrestle Shawn Michaels

The Rock loved working with others and getting the best out of their talents in WWE, but he did shut down one potential dream match. Past rumors claimed that Rock didn’t want to work with Shawn Michaels in the 2000s due to issues in his earlier days.

The belief was that Michaels tried to sabotage the career of Rock in 1996-1997 when he posed a threat to his role as the top star in WWE. Rock clearly held a grudge and didn’t want to have a match with someone that almost ruined his career. The two ended up getting along in later years and we missed out on a potentially great match.
