Roman Reigns has certainly had an interesting journey in his pro wrestling career up to this point, mainly because the entirety of the career in question has taken place in WWE.
From the early days of FCW all the way through to his time on the main roster, Reigns has been on a rollercoaster ride and it doesn't show any signs of slowing down. The multiple-time world champion is the definition of a divisive figure, and for better or worse, he will continue to hold that distinction for as long as he decides to keep competing in the squared circle.
10 COME AROUND - Being A Survivor
When Roman Reigns announced that his leukemia had returned, nobody really knew what to think or how to feel. Everyone in the pro wrestling world came together in support of Roman, as you’d probably expect, but it was still an incredibly worrying time.
Therefore, when he returned, it served as a moment of great triumph for The Big Dog. He had battled leukemia once again and came out on the other side an even stronger man than he was before. That’s the kind of hard-hitting story that is going to get people on your side.
9 HAVEN’T - Doesn’t Erase The Past
Alas, everyone who remembers beyond the last few years will be well aware of the position that Reigns found himself in not so long ago. He was getting booed week in and week out, was being pushed too hard too quickly, and just didn’t really seem to have an honest connection with the fans.
Sure, there was a fanbase of sorts there, but you can’t just pretend like everything from 2015 to 2019 didn’t happen. It’s part of Roman’s story and WWE will have to work much harder in order to gloss over it.
8 COME AROUND - Passion For The Business
You don’t necessarily have to like Roman Reigns, but having some respect for the kind of passion that he shows for this business is a necessity.
Every single time he goes out there in front of a live crowd, it’s pretty clear to see that he is in a league of his own when it comes to the psychology that he puts into his matches. Some would argue against that point, and if that’s the case, we’d encourage you to really watch him the next time he steps inside the squared circle.
7 HAVEN’T - Stacked Roster
Whether it be on SmackDown, RAW or NXT, there are so many talented guys and girls for fans to enjoy watching that it’s kind of insane at this point. There has never been more to see and appreciate, and there are a lot of different styles to sink your teeth into.
As such, Reigns hasn’t really begin given much of an opportunity to stand out amongst the rest of the crowd. He’s certainly good enough to do so, but being good enough and being on a hot run of form are two very different things.
6 COME AROUND - Entertaining Matches
We’ve honestly lost count of how many guys on the main roster, and down in NXT, Reigns has had fun matches with. The content and choreography of any given match is obviously integral to determining how successful it will be, and we can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that Reigns gets that.
His style allows for him to tackle pretty much any competitor and make a fun match out of it, but putting the hard graft in to make that reality falls to Roman himself and nobody else.
5 HAVEN’T - No Heel Turn
After all these years you’d think that WWE would’ve pulled the trigger on a Roman Reigns heel turn: but much like John Cena, they’ve failed to do so. He’s taken on the role of being a tweener on more than one occasion, and he’s even come across as a bit of a heel sometimes, but that clean-cut turn just has not happened.
Fans always felt as if WWE was trying to maintain a stubborn position when it came to that, and when we look back on it, it’s hard to disagree.
4 COME AROUND - Ability To Take Criticism
Whether it be serious critiques or just standard trolling, nobody seems to handle the pressure better than Roman Reigns. We can’t imagine he always appreciates being called every single name under the sun or anything like that, but he’s proven himself to be the mature one in this situation which we can, and will, appreciate.
Turning off social media and blocking out the noise is the healthiest move anyone can make in pretty much any walk of life. While that may not have Roman’s tactic, the point still very much stands.
3 HAVEN’T - Generic Moveset
From the Superman Punch to the Spear and beyond, it’s kind of upsetting to see just how telegraphed some of Roman’s moves have become. He still makes them look good, or else he wouldn’t be able to have such good matches, but we’d still like to see a little bit of diversity every now and then.
We understand that WWE wants to put the focus on specific moves that the fans are going to recognize and we appreciate that, but even so, it gets a bit dull and tedious sometimes.
2 COME AROUND - The Shield Memories
Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose. Together, those three men combined to make up the best faction of their generation: The Shield. They were so unbelievably dominant, and while their reunion run didn’t quite catch fire for a variety of reasons, the initial spell of the trio working together was just so much fun.
Roman was adored during his time with The Shield, and it seemed to be the only moment during his ‘hated’ period that fans actually gave him a little bit of appreciation. We’d like to see that again.
1 HAVEN’T - Promo Work
The problem with Reigns’ promo work is that it’s all just too heavily scripted. Nothing about what he says seems or sounds realistic, and it doesn’t feel like something he would actually say.
If you allow Roman to go into a freestyle state of mind and just let his mind run wild, you’d be much better off. He’s quite clearly a smart guy, he’s powerful, he’s got a great look, and he’s a fun person to listen to – especially when out of character. Let’s take those shackles off and left him breathe.
