Despite often being pelted with boos and rejections from the WWE Universe, Roman Reigns has been pushed heavily by the creative team to be the next face of professional wrestling.
With John Cena taking on a part-time role over the past couple of years, WWE has tried to make Reigns the next big thing. Though it hasn't gone the way Vince McMahon, Triple H and Reigns himself would like, The Roman Empire continues to headline many big shows - including the last three WrestleManias.
Reigns has been compared by some (including Triple H), to the likes of John Cena and The Rock, his real-life cousin. The National recently did an interview with Reigns, and asked him how he feels about the comparisons. Here's how he responded:
"It is a great responsibility. It is a big plate. But for me I never look at it as being the next anybody. I just want to be the first Roman Reigns. It is very flattering and you are in good company when you are compared to people like a John Cena or a Dwayne Johnson.
But all I can be is me. Roman Reigns. And that is all I want to be. So as long as that is good enough for me, I love and respect myself enough to be happy and satisfied with that. Hopefully people enjoy what we are doing. It is not only about me."
That's a strong response from Reigns, and he reaps plenty of confidence. Though he hasn't fully gotten over with the crowd yet, Reigns has done an excellent job pushing himself and remaining focused as the WWE tries to make him their next big star. The Intercontinental Champion recently reformed The Shield alongside Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, and has received far more cheers since.
Reigns has the in-ring ability, confidence and drive to be the next John Cena or Rock. He still has a long way to go, but Reigns is on the right track. He's set to face Triple H at t Zayed Sports City Tennis Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Dec. 8, with the Intercontinental title on the line.
