Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats recently reported a handful of rumors going around. Among them? The expectation is that a superstar from the SmackDown brand will win the Royal Rumble, and therefore the chance to headline WrestleMania 34. If that’s the case, then Reigns will not be winning his second event in four years.
Remember, it’s only a rumor for the time being. Nonetheless, you can’t help but speculate who possible winners could be. With AJ Styles likely holding onto his WWE Championship before the pay-per-view, that leaves Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Jinder Mahal, Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura as some of the big names that could win it.
But with Orton reportedly taking plenty of time off in the coming months, it’s not logical for him to win it again. And the odds of a Superstar Shake-Up happening before the Rumble also appear to be next to nothing. So don’t start holding out hope that Reigns or Seth Rollins will win it.
Though Reigns may not win the Rumble, he had still headlined the last two WrestleMania events – facing Triple H and The Undertaker, respectively. It’s still very much in play for him to face Lesnar for the Universal Championship, and to once again headline the Grandest Stage of Them All.
If a SmackDown superstar indeed wins the event, it’ll be the second year in a row where somebody from Daniel Bryan’s brand wins it. Last year, Orton won his second Royal Rumble and would defeat Bray Wyatt to win the WWE Championship.
This year’s show is set for Jan. 28 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Unlike previous years, the playing field appears to be wide open – and it’s anybody’s guess who wins it in 2018.
