On Monday's episode of Raw, it was made official that Ronda Rousey would be challenging Nia Jax for the Raw Women's Championship at Money in the Bank. It was not a match Rousey asked for, but Jax offered, suggesting she wanted to face the best in the Women's Division. Suggesting Rousey didn't deserve to jump in line, but not ready to pass up the opportunity, the Baddest Woman on the Planet accepted. As a result, there are many who believe she will head to Money in the Bank, defeat Jax and move on to SummerSlam as the Raw Women's Champion.
If that happens — and even if it doesn't — this match dramatically changes what might have been the longer-term plans for SummerSlam. This particular match appears to have come out of nowhere but should have far-reaching effects on the women's wrestling product moving forward. Below are just a few ways Rousey versus Nia Jax at Money in the Bank will change SummerSlam.
If Rousey Wins
If you ask a number of insiders, most would have told you Ronda Rousey would eventually be a women's champion in WWE. Would they have guessed it might happen upon her second match in the company? Probably not. Should she be the champion going into SummerSlam, there will be a lot of possibilities and ways WWE can take this.
First, Rousey will have a massive target on her back. She already had one considering she was an "outsider" coming in and getting a prime spot in the division and at WrestleMania 34. That said, not many women were willing to try and prove their point, then take a butt-kicking without winning something out of it. If the title is the reward, expect a slew of new challengers to come forward and try for the title.
Rousey will first have to deal with Jax who would be due a rematch but then women from Alexa Bliss to Bayley, Sasha Banks, The Riott Squad and maybe even Natalya might take a look. She'll have to look over her shoulder the entire way to the summer's biggest party. Rousey will become the hunted in WWE.
If Jax Retains
If Nia Jax retains her title, what does that mean for Ronda Rousey? Will WWE try to spin it that Rousey is just like everyone else and can lose a match? After all, she's new to wrestling and it has quite the learning curve. Or, will there be interference to have her save face? A loss this early for Rousey could be devastating to her WWE career and this is not necessarily a win/win for either competitor.
I know it sounds simple but, if Rousey loses, she becomes a loser. That's not a great idea for WWE coming out of the gate with her character especially considering the way her MMA career ended. If Jax wins, Jax has some major stepping up to do to be worthy of taking out Rousey. Jax would immediately become the powerhouse of Raw and Rousey might wonder what her next move is.
The Stephanie Feud Ends or Heats Up
Should Rousey become the champion, one of two things will happen. Either Rousey has so many people gunning for her that Stephanie McMahon's beef with her becomes an afterthought. Or, Stephanie returns and makes it her life mission to go after Rousey, especially now that she's the champion.
This could be another Stone Cold versus the Corporation angle where Vince was desperately trying to take the title off Austin's waist. If Stephanie feels like she already owes some payback to Rousey for what happened in their match at WrestleMania 34 and then her busting McMahon's arm afterward, Stephanie will surely target Rousey if she's got the belt. This could the big storyline heading into SummerSlam with Rousey's opponent being secondary to McMahon simply trying to steal that belt.
