The Royal Rumble is still a while away, but WWE typically loves to start planning WrestleMania season months in advance. January sparks the start of the calendar year for everyone, including WWE when they want to start putting plans in motion. The Royal Rumble event is when everything stars. WWE will start booking the main events for WrestleMania with the winner of the men’s and women’s Rumble matches each gaining a title shot at WrestleMania.
Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch winning in 2019 essentially set them up as the two most important stars in the entire promotion. Both wrestlers are still going through with their title reigns as the Rumble wins moved them to an even higher level in the company. We will look at some of the wrestlers that will have a good shot or no shot at finding the same success. These are five wrestlers favored to win the 2020 Royal Rumble matches along with five that have no chance.
10 Favorite: Bray Wyatt
The momentum of Bray Wyatt is strong following the recent character revamp. Wyatt’s Firefly Fun House skits are arguably the most consistent source of entertainment on WWE television. A new alter ego as The Fiend found massive success at Summerslam.
Wyatt has a realistic chance to become a legitimate top star if the booking supports him this time around. The potential of winning the Rumble match would skyrocket him into the main event picture. Fans would support Wyatt as he moved on to face whichever top name is holding a world title.
9 No chance: The Miz
There was some hope from WWE fans that The Miz would return to the main event picture in 2019. A feud with Shane McMahon was big for his character, but Miz lost all the big matches and fell back down into the mid-card picture.
It doesn’t appear Miz will break out of his current spot on the roster. The role is good to have since he gets to showcase his skills and receive relevant television time, but the main event picture still eludes him.
8 Favorite: Brock Lesnar
WWE’s use of Brock Lesnar means fans should never forgot about him. The 2019 surprise return of Lesnar at Money in the Bank saw him win the briefcase despite not being advertised. Lesnar has dominated the WWE title picture over the past five years.
The losses to Seth Rollins at WrestleMania and Summerslam shocked fans but provided hope Brock would be out of the title scene for a while. However, the loss just means that the surprise factor will be higher. Don’t be surprised if Lesnar returns to the company in the Rumble match to win a title shot.
7 No chance: Baron Corbin
WWE has used Baron Corbin in the main event picture inconsistently throughout the years. Corbin having a long feud with Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship failed to make him a relevant player moving forward. WWE still has big plans for him, but there is a ceiling to his success.
Corbin does not have the versatility to make the leap into the consistent main event picture along the likes of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Daniel Bryan. WWE would be making a big mistake if they considered Corbin for WM main event as it’s virtually impossible that he’ll win the Royal Rumble.
6 Favorite: Kevin Owens
Kevin Owens has created a great deal of momentum as a face during his feud with Shane McMahon. The rise of Owens sees him playing a face for the first consistent stint in the role in WWE. Owens’ promos have been delivering great entertainment for the Smackdown side of things.
Most instances of a wrestler having this momentum as a face would lead to a title shot, but the face champions of Seth Rollins and Kofi Kingston would not sense for Owens to face. One of the titles will likely change hands ahead of the Royal Rumble and Owens could be a favorite to win the Rumble match.
5 No chance: Asuka
The women’s Royal Rumble match has become a tremendous addition to the event now that we get two battle royals each show. Asuka was the first woman to win the female Rumble and moved into a tremendous match against Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 34.
WWE sadly would not use Asuka with the same luster after her undefeated streak ended. Asuka is teaming with Kairi Sane in the Kabuki Warriors with Paige as their manager, but they rarely get television time. The run of Asuka as a potential top star is over as she won’t win another Rumble match.
4 Favorite: Roman Reigns
Roman Reigns has stayed away from the world title picture since returning to WWE at the start of the year. The feuds for Reigns have featured interesting stories as he’s doing better not having the title for a while. However, that is not likely going to last much longer.
WWE loves to put the title on the biggest star and Reigns still holds that spot as the face of the company. Reigns will be a strong favorite to win the men’s Rumble match and moving back into a WrestleMania main event is a safe bet.
3 No chance: Rusev
The Royal Rumble match gives a great opportunity to bring an absent wrestler from television back in surprising fashion to pull off the massive win. Rusev and Lana have been off television for many months now and their WWE future is up in the air.
Fans of Rusev Day will be disappointed if they expect Rusev to get such an important return like winning a Royal Rumble match. Rusev returning in the Rumble is possible, but WWE clearly doesn’t view him as being a top-level star based on the booking throughout his career.
2 Favorite: Ronda Rousey
Ronda Rousey has been off WWE television since losing the Raw Women’s Championship to Becky Lynch in the main event of WrestleMania 35. There are mixed reports about the future of Rousey since she’s taken the time off to enjoy life at home with her husband.
Some people believe Rousey is planning to start a family, but no one knows for sure. Rousey wanting to return to WWE would easily create the perfect scenario of her making a surprise appearance in the Royal Rumble to win the title shot. Becky Lynch and Rousey still have yet to receive a singles match and WrestleMania 36 may be the best place.
1 No chance: Finn Balor
Another wrestler taking some time off away from the ring is Finn Balor. WWE has seen the value of Balor with the Demon receiving massive ovations and selling merchandise, but the booking of him without the paint is quite lackluster.
Vince McMahon reportedly doesn’t view Balor as a top-level star. The surprise return of Balor at the Royal Rumble could be the perfect way to bring him back and skyrocket him into the main event picture. It won’t happen unless Balor somehow finds a way to win over McMahon ahead of the Rumble match.
