Vince McMahon may be on the verge of giving the XFL another shot, the WWE Chairman's failed attempt at creating his own football league.

Vince McMahon has always claimed that he isn't in the wrestling business. No, the WWE Chairman prefers to tell people that he's in the entertainment business. It's why he insists on what happens under his WWE umbrella be referred to as sports entertainment and that those who perform in his ring are Superstars, not wrestlers.

Well wrestling isn't the only sport Mr McMahon has tried to give an entertainment twist to in his time. In 2001 WWE and NBC launched a joint venture known as the XFL. It ran during the NFL's off-season and was supposed to serve as an alternative to the league. One of the XFL's supposed selling points was that its rules were less strict than the NFL's. After just one season the league folded and even Vince himself admitted that it was a 'colossal failure'.

Those last two words are the reason that the latest rumors are so surprising. As first reported by Brad Shepard on Twitter, Vince McMahon may be planning on bringing the failed football league back. According to Shepard, if the rumors are true then Vince will announce the return of the XFL on January 25th. Fightful reached out to WWE about the rumors and although they could not confirm that Mr. McMahon is planning on relaunching the XFL, they did reveal that he is funding a company called Alpha Entertainment. Through that venture he will 'explore investment opportunities across the sports and entertainment landscapes, including professional football'.

It's hard to decide whether this is good news or not. You'd have thought that Vince would have realized back in 2001 that football fans aren't looking for an alternative to the NFL. On the other hand a lot of time has passed and the world is a very different place now. If McMahon does indeed give the XFL another shot sometime in the near future then it will likely be very different from the one that flopped 16 years ago.

Just to clarify, at this moment in time the return of the XFL is nothing more than a rumor. Vince McMahon's involvement in Alpha Entertainment is an interesting revelation though. Whether it be the relaunch of the XFL or not, it appears that the owner of WWE wants to try his hand at making a little money from a few other forms of sports entertainment.
