With his high-flying offense and penchant for throwing a chair at a dude’s face and then kicking it, Rob Van Dam was one of the most beloved of the 1990s ECW roster. RVD was also highly popular in the WWE during the 2000s and TNA (now known as Impact Wrestling) during the 2010s. In the years since his 1990 debut, he’s held titles all over the place.

But not all title reigns are created equal. Sometimes plans change and a wrestler has to drop a title prematurely or a reign is just full of lackluster title defenses. Rob Van Dam isn’t immune to the ebbs and flows of pro wrestling, so here are some of his best and worst title reigns.

10 Best: WWE Intercontinental Championship (2002)

Over the course of his two stints with World Wrestling Entertainment, Rob Van Dam managed to capture the prestigious Intercontinental Championship six times, putting him in the top five wrestlers with the most IC straps. His third reign with the title only lasted 22 days and he lost it on his second defense. But RVD had strong matches with Benoit and Jericho, and ended up unifying the Intercontinental Title with the Hardcore Title in a match with fellow ECW icon Tommy Dreamer.

9 Worst: WWE Tag Team Championship (2004-2005)

A tag team of RVD and Rey Mysterio Jr. is such a money idea that it’s a shame their title reign lasted a little more than a month. There’s one good title defense against Booker T and Eddie Guerrero on the 12/30/2004 Smackdown, but the duo ended up losing it in a four-way match a couple weeks later to The Basham Brothers. The Basham Brothers, who are somehow a different tag team from The Gymini, yet equally well-remembered.

8 Best: WWE Intercontinental Championship (2002)

RVD’s second run with the IC Title is not only his longest at 68 days, but also his best. After winning it in an amazing ladder match with Eddie Guerrero, Van Dam tore it up in this two-month-and-some-change reign.

This reign saw RVD defend the gold at Vengeance against a shiny new Brock Lesnar. RVD's reign also saw a title unification ladder match with Jeff Hardy’s European Championship before he lost the IC Belt to Chris Benoit. A really respectable showing.

7 Worst: TNA X Division Title (2012-2013)

The X Division had really declined by the Hogan/Bischoff era of TNA. The division's classic matches became ancient history. Rob Van Dam had already been TNA World Heavyweight Champion at this point, so this run felt like RVD playing the old hits and spending a month wrestling Kenny King until he eventually lost the title. On a positive note, this is a surprisingly lengthy run at 137 days -- longer than any title reign he held in WWE.

6 Best: ECW World Tag Team Championship (1998-1999)

Rob Van Dam held the ECW World Tag Team Championship with longtime buddy Sabu twice, and both reigns were pretty strong. This second one is actually slightly longer at 125 days, but ended on a rather strange note when Sabu was suspended by ECW management, forcing RVD to defend the title alone against D-Von Dudley in a singles match. Good thing Van Dam had his Television Championship to fall back on.

5 Worst: ECW Championship (2006)

It may come as a shock that Rob Van Dam never won the real ECW World Championship during the company’s existence. He technically didn’t even win the WWE version of the ECW Championship, either -- Paul Heyman awarded it to RVD on the first episode of ECW after his victory over John Cena at One Night Stand. Unfortunately a real-life suspension forced him to lose the title, and he did so in the least dignified way: by losing to The Big Show three episodes later.

4 Best: ECW World Tag Team Championship (1998)

Running at 119 days, Rob Van Dam’s first run with the ECW Tag Titles alongside Sabu was the stronger of the two thanks to a large number of title defenses against a variety of foes, including Chris Candido, Lance Storm, Bam Bam Bigelow, and The Dudley Boyz.

Their match against Hayabusa and Jinsei Shinzaki at Heat Wave 1998 is a highlight for -- as you might expect -- the crazy spots.

3 Worst: TNA World Championship (2010)

RVD won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship from AJ Styles on a random episode of Impact with no build, but later had a decent rematch at Sacrifice 2010. But after 113 days, RVD was forced to vacate because TNA used up the limited number of appearances stipulated in his contract. Embarrassing. Also, there’s a three-minute squash against Nigel McGuinness in this run. TNA really deserved to be clowned by fans and wrestling journalists for their awful booking decisions.

2 Best: ECW World Television Champion (1998-2000)

Rob Van Dam’s WWE and TNA runs were marred by a healthy mixture false starts and utter nonsense, but ECW, for all its problems, understood that RVD shreds, and there he did things like hold a title for 700 days. He wasn’t the first ECW Television Champion, but he defined that title with his landmark reign, which only ended because he got injured and had to vacate -- a reason that makes sense.

1 Worst: WWE Championship (2006)

Rob Van Dam’s One Night Stand title bout against John Cena is one of the great 21st Century WWE matches, but the actual title reign pales in comparison. RVD got arrested on a drug charge, so WWE quickly took the belt off of him in a triple threat involving Edge and Cena on Raw, ending his reign at 22 days. It’s a lot like the big Kofi Kingston or Daniel Bryan championship wins, where the momentous victory outshines a lackluster title reign.
