The wrestling war between AEW and WWE began in May, when the new wrestling promotion ran Double or nothing -  its first event and pay-per-view show.

Two days later, Sami Zayn took part in an "electric air" segment on Monday Night Raw. He took questions from fans in the crowd, but wasn't happy when one spectator asked him about the Universal Championship.

Zayn called out the fans and said "You could have asked me about AEW," which immediately made headlines - because it's a big no-no for WWE to bring up the rival company during their shows.

But Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio noted shortly after that Zayn's "AEW" mention was all part of the script - although some inside WWE thought the whole idea was "stupid." When WWE uploaded the segment to YouTube, Zayn's AEW reference was taken out.

In an interview with Catch-Newz.com, Zayn was questioned about if he had any regrets over the segment; the outlet noted that Zayn has quite the losing record since returning to the company in April.

But this has just been blown out of proportion by the internet, according to Zayn. Here's what he had to say on the matter (translated to English):

"No no. It really was not a big story besides what was on the internet. Basically, the goal of the segment was a small new segment that we were trying for people. An unscripted thing. I knew that if we say 'AEW' like that, people would talk about it.

That's exactly what happened. As you see, nothing really happened after I said that. It was done once, and nothing happened...It was a small segment of a time, it was the goal, to have people talking about it."

Zayn's mention of AEW was one of the first shots WWE fired at their new business rival. We've seen AEW fire back at WWE numerous times since Dynamite began airing on Wednesday nights - including a segment last week where Cody Rhodes mocked the old company he and Chris Jericho once worked at.

So far, Dynamite is 4-0 against NXT in the Wednesday Night War ratings, although numbers have been slipping for both shows in the early stages. Certainly, more verbal jabs between the two companies await.

Zayn Hasn't Been Pushed Since AEW Reference

WWE has barely used Zayn since he mentioned AEW, and it's quite disappointing when you consider how big of a star he was in NXT. He's flourished as a heel, but WWE won't give him those opportunities. Perhaps a reunion with long-time friend and enemy Kevin Owens awaits, otherwise, it's anybody's guess how WWE will use Zayn down the road.
