On Friday, Sami Zayn received The Humanitarian Award for his work in Syria via the Sami For Syria campaign that helps with resident healthcare.

Sami Zayn is currently wearing the hat of a type of Superstar he isn't really used to playing over the course of his career, a bad guy. Both before and since signing for WWE, Zayn has normally played the fan favorite babyface, but right now, he and Kevin Owens are running rough shot on SmackDown Live as the blue brand's resident heels.

Away from the wrestling ring, however, it seems that Zayn couldn't be any more of a babyface. Last summer, the former NXT Champion launched his Sami For Syria campaign in conjunction with the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS). Their aim is to raise funds to help provide Mobile Medical Units (MMU) for residents of Syria that might not otherwise have access to proper medical care.

While Zayn is Canadian, his parents are actually both Syrian immigrants, hence his desire to get involved with this type of charity work. Clearly, the work being done on the ground thanks to Sami For Syria has already made quite an impact as on Friday Zayn was presented with The Humanitarian Award. SAMS presented the award to Zayn and on Instagram, the WWE Superstar wrote that he couldn't put into words how honored he is and the workers risking their lives in Syria are the ones who deserve the award.

It's very noble of Zayn to say that, and on many levels, that is the case. However, it's his own notoriety as a famous professional wrestler that has enabled Sami For Syria and SAMS to raise money and further their cause in such a short space of time. WWE themselves have also given Zayn an avenue to spread his message via their own social media.

The Underdog From The Underground will have his sights set on a very different kind of award heading into the next few weeks. On March 11, 2018,  Zayn will be one of five men competing for the WWE Championship at Fastlane. It might not compare to the work that got him The Humanitarian Award but if he were to win the WWE Title then it would signify the culmination of a career's worth of hard work.
