To this very day in the WWE, when the glass shatters, the WWE Universe is sent into a near frenzy. The noise means that Stone Cold Steve Austin’s in the arena! WWE’s Toughest SOB to ever step in the ring. From his earliest days in World Class all the way to his breakout years, it was clear that the Texas Rattlesnake had talent. For years he was just a good mechanic in the ring having good matches with anyone and everyone.

Then he was put in the Dangerous Alliance, then the Hollywood Blondes. However, that was all just setting the stage for Stunning Steve to eventually explode. But first, Vince just had to give him the microphone.

10 Rattlesnakes Can Still Bite

It was years since there was a Rattlesnake sighting on Monday Night Raw. But during the 25th Anniversary at Barclays, the Bionic Redneck returned and went back to doing one of the things he does best - stun McMahons. He came, he stunned, cracked a beer or three and stomped back to the locker room.

While it wasn’t seen on the live show, the promo that Austin cut on Mike Rome not only being unprepared to interview him, but not worthy of interviewing the Hall Of Famer; while he was ripping on the people who aren’t drawing was priceless.

9 Monday NyQuil

Getting fired stinks. Getting fired by FedEx is a real gut punch. That was the chosen method Eric Bischoff had used to let people go at WCW, including Stunning Steve Austin. But thanks to Austin’s friendship with Paul Heyman, he was invited to come to ECW and vent. We were introduced to a new show - “Monday NyQuil,” hosted by Eric Bischoff and “Bongo.” Since the Brain couldn’t make the show, he was also fired by FedEx.

It was the show where the big boys play...with each other and have a Geritol on a pole match. The promo showed off some of the humorous side that Austin used to showcase when he was with the Hollywood Blondes.

8 The Hitman Returns

According to the rumor, when Bret Hart returned in 1996, the only person he wanted to work with was Stone Cold. As Austin has said in the past, Bret saw Austin coming before Austin did. The promos to set up their matches included the famous “if you put S in front of the word Hitman, you get exactly what I think of Bret Hart” line.

But it also produced this wild video shot by WWE video maven, David Sahadi. There is a slew of great Austin promos on this list and elsewhere, but this is one that captures the very essence of the Stone Cold character.

7 Austin Sets Up A Massacre

After the Royal Rumble ‘99 was won by Vince McMahon, the Chairman thought that he was going to be rid of Austin and his WrestleMania dreams. As Vince was ruminating with victory, Austin and then-commissioner, Shawn Michaels appeared on the Titantron live from HBK’s home.

As the duo drank in the WWE’s playbook (a bottle of Jack Daniels), Austin declared as much as he wanted the WWE title back, he might want to beat the tar out of Vince more. The steel cage match at St. Valentine’s Day Massacre was set.

6 We’re Not Talking About A Guy Named Jeb

Before the “What?” chants became insufferable, Austin was able to whip the crowd and maybe even people at home into an absolute frenzy and he did it just talking about anything. No matter how ridiculous.

After getting cheated out of winning the 2002 Royal Rumble, Austin stomped to the ring to talk about it. But first he rattled off the story about a man named Jeb and proceeded to do the entire then from The Beverly Hillbillies, and the crowd was right behind him every step of the way.

5 Rock And Austin Gear Up For War

The Rattlesnake has been able to trade barbs over the years with the best of them. But he has done so with no better than the Rock. Combine that with Austin’s penchant for silliness after the show and you get this sparring match from the Smackdown before the WWE vs. Alliance Survivor Series 2001.

Neither man was letting a man get a word in edgewise as they kept snatching the mic from one another. To ease the tension, Austin thought it would be a good idea to sing a song to the Great One.

4 Dry County

How to make an already ornery Bionic Redneck even more ornery? You pull into a dry county, that’s how. As the Hall Of Famer was gearing up for a match with Jericho for the Undisputed Title at No Way Out 2002, he made a stopover at Monday Night Raw to deal with the Undertaker first.

But the issue was in Jonesboro, the Rattlesnake couldn’t get any alcohol. So, Austin does what he does best – stopped over in another town and loaded up a slew of whiskey, beer, tequila, and more beer before disrespecting the Deadman.

3 Austin Gets Extreme

Superstar Steve Austin didn’t spend a long time in ECW. But it was in the Land Of Extreme that Austin started formulating the Stone Cold character, just by being himself.

While he also had a lot of fun with the Monday NyQuil and Stevomania promos, here Austin lays down the gauntlet on everything he suggested and, in his best Dusty voice explained why none of his ideas were going to work. Now he was hottest free agent in wrestling, and Tod Gordon had to mortgage his house at least three times to be able to afford the future Bionic Redneck.

2 The Beer Truck

With just six days left until WrestleMania XV, Stone Cold rolled into Raw driving a beer truck. Most fans remember the iconic climax of this interview, Austin dousing the Corporation with a beer bath, but the promo he delivered before was one for the ages.

Demanding that Rock look him in the eye and start to get serious about their match, Austin let the world know he’s checking into the Smackdown Hotel, heading to room 316, and burning the whole thing down on his way to once again becoming the WWE champion.

1 Austin 3:16

How powerful can a promo be? In less than two minutes, not only did Stone Cold change the trajectory of his own career, but the entire industry, and a whole heap of pop culture, all with one epic promo.

The famous line was just eight words - “Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!” But those eight words became the very mantra for a career that dominated the latter half of the nineties and to this day remains one of the greatest promos of all time.
