Whether you like it or not, WWE is still the world's biggest wrestling company, and although you may favor promotions like New Japan, Ring of Honor, Progress or any number of smaller promotions,  WWE has its ups as well as downs. Unfortunately, when you are producing as much content as WWE is, as well as all the merchandising and promotion, you are going to have a lot more criticisms than those aforementioned promotions. However, in the case of WWE, a lot of it is justified.

Any entertainment company is going to have its ups and downs, but with so many passionate fans like WWE have, they will also have enough passionate critics, and that brings us to this list. So sit back and read along as we take a look at the entire WWE landscape and analyze 15 of the worst things about Vince McMahon’s company in its current state, and the 15 biggest positives.

30 Worst: Short-term Booking

via wwe.com

Wrestling is at its best when long term stories are woven with plenty of twists and turns, but unfortunately, with all the content WWE have to produce, they have just struggled to do that. From week to week, the WWE writing team can easily forget something that happened just a matter of days ago, and when compared to the long-term story arcs in NXT, it’s quite noticeable. The 50/50 booking of stop-start pushes is also a big complaint, and with the new, promised shake-up from the McMahons, many people hope this will change, but it’s unlikely considering it has been going on for a decade now.

29 Best: Video Editing Team

via Imgur.com

For years now, WWE starts a big PPV match off with a hype video, and even when the matches haven’t lived up to expectation, the video editing team manage to knock it out of the park every time. Whether it be for NXT or the main roster, these videos perfectly encapsulate what makes wrestling great, and although it can’t save the matches, it can make for great viewing. Looking back, bouts like Ciampa vs. Gargano, Punk vs. Cena, Cena vs. Miz and countless others have been prefaced by these amazing videos, and we hope it does continue.

28 Worst: The Schedule

WWE has been dealing with a number of injuries for quite some time now, and while accidents do happen, they are going to be more frequent when the performers have to work such a ridiculous schedule. Sure, they are getting paid plenty of money to do so, and they are mostly all living their dream jobs, but wrestling four, five, and sometimes six times a week on top of all the flying and driving (with car rentals on the wrestlers' dime) is just too much. WWE makes great money off live shows and overseas tours when wrestlers aren’t at RAW or SmackDown, so we can’t see it changing anytime soon, but they need to slow down a little unless they want these injuries to continue.

27 Best: WWE Network

via wwe.com

When it was announced, there were plenty of issues and questions surrounding the WWE Network, but in the time since, it has become the best tool for any wrestling fan around the world. Not only does it have every WWE, WCW and ECW PPV of all-time, but it’s got every current PPV, as well as several original programs (most of which are hit-or-miss), for the relatively cheap price of $9.99. This would have been a dream for wrestling fans in generations past, and if you enjoy watching WWE (particularly NXT and NXT TakeOver), than this is something you need.

26 Worst: Treatment Of The Universal Title

via correspondentlive.com

The Universal Championship debuted at SummerSlam 2016 to a displeased WWE Universe (for the design, not the great match), and ever since that point, they’ve been doing nothing but tarnishing its meaning in WWE. We’ve seen Kevin Owens have a great run with the belt, but since that point, it’s been Goldberg and Brock Lesnar, and due to this, the fans just no longer care about it. Brock Lesnar and part-time stars is something we will get to, but having him show up once every few months to defend the belt makes it almost meaningless, and WWE needs to realize this very soon.

25 Best: Mauro Ranallo

via Sports Illustrated

WWE’s commentary is very up and down, but when the announcers are allowed to have freedom and show their own personality, they shine, and the best example of that is Mauro Ranallo. Some may see him as a bit over the top, but the energy and excitement he brings to NXT, especially TakeOver, is unmatched, and it just improves the product greatly. We may never see him back on the main roster again, but NXT is so lucky for having him, as it makes the big matches and big moments seem even bigger to the audience watching at home.

24 Worst: Treatment Of Former NXT Stars

via wwe.com

No matter what WWE will tell you about their flagship show, RAW pales in comparison to NXT as the best WWE brand, and whether it’s due to this or some other reason, a lot of NXT stars have struggled on the main roster. Performers like The Revival, Tyler Breeze, Neville, Andrade Almas, Sami Zayn, and others have been held down on the main roster, and while there’s no certain cause, it’s definitely happening. Some say it’s due to Vince McMahon not having any plans for the performers he calls up, and that makes complete sense, but whatever the case, WWE have messed up the momentum of just about every debuting NXT star, and it needs to stop.

23 Best: Letting Performers Wrestle Outside Of WWE

via cagesideseats.com

This does seem like a small thing to add to this list, but it shows WWE, under Triple H’s guidance may be able to continue to work with other promotions in the future. Over the past few years, we’ve seen guys like Kassius Ohno, Killian Dain, Noam Dar and Apollo Crews wrestle outside of WWE, and while we can’t see them working with New Japan anytime soon, they could lead up to something big. 2018 has been a very wild year in wrestling, and it’s proven that absolutely anything can happen, so in the future, maybe these types of things become bigger and involve more promotions.

22 Worst: Overly Scripted Promos

via wwe.fr

The modern WWE is full of great professional wrestling, but they just don’t have the characters and the larger than life performers of old, and most of that is due to just how scripted everything is. Due to this, barely any of the characters seem genuine with what they are saying, and adding this to the formulaic way the show is set out, it just makes it all seem so boring. Sure, there are people like John Cena and The New Day who have earned some of this freedom, and they have repaid WWE with entertaining promos and great characters, but until the rest of the roster begin to get a little bit more freedom, this will always be a problem.

21 Best: Renewed Focus On Tournaments

via twitter.com

As New Japan’s popularity continues to grow, their tournaments (BOSJ, G1, New Japan Cup etc.) become even more prestigious, and now, WWE is finally following suit. With the Mixed Match Challenge, Mae Young Classic, Dusty Rhodes Classic, and Cruiserweight Classic, WWE is proving that tournaments can be incredibly fun, and when done properly, a great way to elevate young talent. If these continue to be yearly features in WWE, the company will be well on their way to turning around their recent string of poor programming.

20 Worst: Treatment Of The Tag Team Division

via wwe.com

Tag team wrestling has always been special, and promotions like ROH and NXT prove this by their use of the tag teams, but on RAW and SmackDown Live, they still haven’t become a priority. Sure, there are plenty of great tag teams on both of those shows, and when given the chance, they shine brighter than most of the roster, but it still seems as though Vince McMahon won’t take it seriously. A lot of people cherish the memories of Edge & Christian, The Hardy Boyz and The Dudleys as some of the best in wrestling history, and that’s what can happen when WWE take tag team wrestling seriously, but over the past few years, it just hasn’t happened.

19 Best: Incoming Women’s Tag Team Championship

via wwe.com

This has been rumored for quite some time now, but as Santa Claus, Vince McMahon announced the long-awaited Women’s Tag Team Titles, and it’s got the WWE roster and the Universe hyped. With WrestleMania season approaching, that seems like the best time to crown new champions, and with The IIconics, Bayley & Sasha, The Bellas, The Riott Squad, and others, there are plenty of candidates for that spot. Only time will tell if the company books this new Championship correctly, but given how fresh and exciting it is, it has to be one of the best things going for WWE right now.

18 Worst: Main Roster Commentary

via dailyddt.com

We’ve touched on just how great NXT is in every phase, but commentary being the main point, and unfortunately, with their over-reliance on the three-man booth, the main roster just can’t get it right. Individually, all of the main roster announcers are great, especially when Vince McMahon isn’t constantly in their ear (see: Michael Cole at the inaugural UK Championship tournament), but together, it’s awful. Sure, it usually doesn’t actively take away from the action in the ring, but it’s just bad enough that it’s noticeable each and every week, and it’s something WWE need to relax on and let the announcers be themselves.

17 Best: Fantastic Roster Of Wrestlers

via pinterest.com

WWE currently has the best and deepest roster in the history of wrestling, as there are incredible performers, both male and female spread across all five brands. Sure, none of them are as big a stars as we saw back in the Attitude Era with the likes of The Rock, Stone Cold, The Undertaker and others, but in terms of pure wrestling ability, no one has ever had a roster this stacked. This does bring with it negatives, as not all of the great wrestlers get enough time to show what they can do, but when given the chance, each and every performer signed to WWE right now is capable of superstardom.

16 Worst: The McMahon Family (As On-Screen Characters)

via f4wonline.com

The McMahon family are the most important in WWE history, and behind the scenes, they will never be able to be replaced, but as on-screen characters, we’ve had enough. Back in the Attitude Era, Vince was the perfect villain to Stone Cold, and The Authority were key in getting Daniel Bryan to the top, but enough is enough. They’ve recently returned to TV amidst the poor quality of programming as of late, but if it isn’t fixed behind the scenes, then this isn’t going to work, and simply put, no one wants to see more McMahon ego on our screens.

15 Best: The Return Of Daniel Bryan

via WWE.com

The Yes Movement is quite possibly the biggest thing to happen in WWE since the Summer of Punk back in 2011, but we were all devastated when he was forced to retire, until 2018 when that physical ban from WWE was lifted. He came back, but it took him a while to catch up, and despite his popularity, the reaction wasn’t the same, so WWE pulled a fantastic move in turning him heel. Now, "The New" Daniel Bryan is one of the best heels the company has seen in quite some time, and headed into 2019, it looks like D-Bry is at the top of his game, something we never thought we’d get to say again after 2014-15.

14 Worst: PPVs That Drag On For Too Long

via Forbes.com

It’s hard enough for most fans to sit through five hours of main roster programming a week, but when you get PPVs that run for four hours and big PPVs that run for six to seven hours, it’s just way too much. Most of these matches aren’t interesting to the WWE Universe as well, so adding in so much content doesn’t make it any better. We understand why WrestleMania and most of the Big 4 PPVs need to be longer, but if the company didn’t try and get as many bouts on the show as possible, it would make for much better quality, and as we saw at WrestleMania 34, the crowd being tired completely ruined the final few matches on the card.

13 Best: Triple H’s Continued Influence

via si.com

Although there is a lot of hate for Vince McMahon, he got WWE to this point, for better or worse, but with the way Triple H is running his business now, he’s winning a lot of people over. From NXT to the Mae Young Classic to NXT UK, it’s clear that Triple H just gets what the fans want from wrestling in 2018, and it shows in the quality of his work. It’s only a matter of time until The Game takes over the main roster. Although the changes won’t be as drastic as most fans on the internet think, it will still be good, as he has proven himself to be a worthy successor to Vince McMahon.

12 Worst: The Comedy

via wwe.com

Wrestling is a great art form, and with all art forms, it takes many shapes, and comedy wrestling when done right, is one of the most entertaining things in the business, but WWE has yet to find that. The Attitude Era was full of great comedy, because the company was pushing boundaries and giving the performers creative freedom, but these days, it’s just hard to watch. Once a joke is made once, WWE feel the need to repeat it over and over again, and most of the time, it’s so forced that it’s not even funny, and sometimes, it ruins the product completely. (Yes, I am referring to the RAW Tag Team Championship story essentially being based around Drake Maverick’s bodily functions.)

11 Best: Focus On Women’s Wrestling

via newslive.com

Women’s wrestling has been getting better and better over the last few years, and while WWE aren’t the only company in the world pushing its women, they’re certainly doing their part. From Evolution to the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble match, WWE has had a year full of firsts, and with stars like Charlotte Flair, Ronda Rousey, and The Man, it looks to be just the beginning. The company has a ready-made feud in Lynch vs. Rousey to be the first ever women’s WrestleMania main event, and that would be the perfect way to show their continued faith in their great female performers.
